Communication is defined as the processes that people use to exchange information. There are two main types of communication (Videbeck, 2014). There is Verbal and Nonverbal communication. Verbal communication is the words that are spoken to another person. Nonverbal communication is behavior that accompanies the verbal communication. An example of this would be body language or eye contact when speaking to another person (Videbeck, 2014).
Another type of communication is therapeutic communication (Videbeck, 2014). Therapeutic communication is an interpersonal interaction between the nurse and the client during which the nurse focuses on the client’s specific needs to promote an effective exchange of information. Establish a therapeutic nurse-client relationship.
2. Facilitate the client’s expression of emotions.
3. Assess the client’s perception of the problem as it unfolds.
The most crucial components of therapeutic communication are confidentiality, privacy, respect for boundaries, and use of touch (Videbeck, 2014).
Proxemics is the study of distance zones between people during communication. There are four distance zones. They are (Videbeck, 2014):
1. Intimate Zone: 0 to 18 inches between people.
2. Personal Zone: 18 to 36 inches between people.
3. Social Zone: 4 to 12 feet between
