Essay On Domestic Violence Shelters

Domestic violence shelters are characterized by helping women and children that are financially struggling to support themselves. Women struggle because they cannot find a job due to their abuse and the shelter struggles because they have decreased government funds due to new bills and old laws. Improvement in the meals provided to the children do not change much over the years. In my semester, the only change was including slices of apple during snack and lunch for the last two weeks. Although this is change, more than one slice of apple is going to be needed in order to give the children the proper amount of nutrients in order to grow and develop properly. The combination of all of these things makes the children of this community more likely to have a mental illness because of the excess stress they have, the lack of nutritious food and the vulnerability of unexpected life changes. The issue of poor nutrition may seem like it is not that important because of the size of the House of Ruth, but in reality it is …show more content…
By helping out at one of these shelters, you come to understand the severity of the violence and how crippling it can be for a woman and their children. You also understand that the children in these shelters are just trying to be normal kids. We need to encourage them to develop and learn new things in the future, so they can flourish in their upcoming years. Volunteering at the House of Ruth opened my eyes to an issue that was new to me. Although the population at the House of Ruth is small, I felt as though I made a big impact on the children by being a role model in their lives for a semester. I hope that what I was able to teach them lessons that stick with them forever. Every kid deserves the chance to grow and develop like a normal kid and it is our job as members of society to provide them the necessary resources to do

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

On a blazing hot afternoon, I was with my Peer Ministry. It seemed like our whole group, interacting with the sizable population of homeless on the streets of Riverside, CA, was working like a fast food crew; we were distributing food from our cars at a superhuman pace. This activity seemed like any ordinary job our group did together — until I handed a brown paper bag to a homeless African American man. His expression registered shock. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Son, how did you know I needed help?”…

Early upon entering the College of Social Work I became interested in the homeless population. In my junior year, I took the time to volunteer with the Renaissance Community Center, an organization that provides various services to Homeless individuals in Tallahassee. Volunteering here taught me about people and the effects of interpersonal communication, how the availability of services can aid people during personal crisis, and the limitations of resources and access on a vulnerable population such as the homeless. This experience is valuable to me as it increased my interest in the population and my awareness of how it intersects with values and the purpose of social work.…

The organization that I would like to support is the Women’s Crisis services. They are a nonprofit, charitable organization that helps women and children who are victims of abuse. The logo that has been adapted by the organization is a Dragonfly, as Carter Revard says, “The Dragonfly lifts us up and encourages us to believe that human courage and ingenuity may keep alive our finest human values.” (Women’s Crisis services 2014). This went along with their tag stating “Moving Beyond Violence.”…

Introduction I’ll never forgot the plaque hanging in my childhood home with a famous Muhammad Ali quote that states, “service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” My parents, Michael and Karen Clavin, specifically placed this sign on the wall of our entrance hall so that it was visible soon as soon as we entered our home. They raised my three brothers and me to always take the opportunity to help others who were in need through service work. In the year 2007, we began volunteering at Nashville’s Room in the Inn every Thursday as a family.…

More than 10,000 people are homeless in Atlanta on any given night, and I was given the opportunity to go and help them. A year and a half ago I went up, from my lovely suburban hometown in Orlando, Florida, to the urban hub of Atlanta, Georgia with my local church’s youth group to help out with the homeless epidemic. Being a veteran of mission trips, I was prepared to help out people who needed help and let the kindness of God move through me like a beacon of love, but I was never prepared for all of it to change the way I viewed life. Morals inculcated in me on that trip still affect my decisions to this day. Morals such as being selfless, having patience, and having empathy profoundly define me as a person because of this trip.…

Volunteering at the Pine Street Inn, one of the largest nonprofit organization in New England serving homeless men and women, affected me to deeply fathom homelessness. I came on Sunday mornings at 5 a.m as a lunch lady, serving healthy well-proportioned breakfast meals that unfortunately, would not suffice their hunger. I was terrified and apprehensive of what was to come. I caught myself on the first day in thinking these individuals as subhuman. I thought I would be serving shaggy crazy individuals.…
