Early upon entering the College of Social Work I became interested in the homeless population. In my junior year, I took the time to volunteer with the Renaissance Community Center, an organization that provides various services to Homeless individuals in Tallahassee. Volunteering here taught me about people and the effects of interpersonal communication, how the availability of services can aid people during personal crisis, and the limitations of resources and access on a vulnerable population such as the homeless. This experience is valuable to me as it increased my interest in the population and my awareness of how it intersects with values and the purpose of social work.

I had difficulties with volunteering in the beginning because I was new and inexperienced. Thus, I made many mistakes and slowed down the process. Additionally, there were times when I dealt poorly with our clients due to lack of information or misinformation. In one incidence, I wounded a client’s self-esteem with my lack of knowledge regarding Prozac in relation to their identification of a mental disability. The client was in a vulnerable position and my actions visibly hurt him and discredited his words, I never saw the client return. In situations such as these, I learned to move past my mistakes and strive to work more effectively in the office. I began to learn the clients’ names and other information to help speed the process so that they would have time to receive the services they need. I had to also become more familiar with what services were available each day. Little things could slow down the process and prevent clients from being able to access necessary services, from a shower to DCF. Often if clients missed the time for a
