English IV Class Analysis

"Senioritis" is real. An English IV class is filled with seniors who are just counting down the days until graduation and it must be hard trying to keep them entertained with the material or able to receive maximum effort in our work ethic. Thankfully I have some ideas in order to make this semester a fun filled one! This semester I would want to do activities that help us understand the material in a more entertaining way. Being able to take hard material and break it down while keeping our attention is also key. If the class is reading a difficult, slow pace book, maybe the students should break down into groups, read it and nitpick the material with each other. That’s a good way to help process information in different ways and seeing different interpretations of the text. In the past, I realize that group projects work better just because the exchange of ideas help readers understand what they are reading in a new …show more content…
At the beginning of the week the teacher will assign certain chapters with a study guide due at the end of the week, then the following Monday the class will turn in the study guides for a quiz grade OR go over them as a class in a seminar. Popcorn reading is also another activity that helps. Also after every paragraph read or every couple of pages stop the reading and go over what we just read and take notes on that. Acting out the text is also a good way to have everyone involved and loosened up with each other and the story they are reading. Giving the students characters or helping them imagine they are the characters’ shoe really put the reader at a greater advantage with the material. With hopes that that will help students embrace the writing, it will make reading the maybe tedious story to a fun thrilled adventure as it should be. These are ways for the class to stay alert and really focus on what they are presented

Mary Beth Stevens suggests writing supports reading by asking students to draw upon common knowledge and thinking processes (2014). In the Texas Treasures Literature curriculum students continually respond to text through writing activities. At the end of each section they record their responses by writing a personal response. These responses require critical and higher order thinking skills because students answer open-ended questions and utilize summarization, inference and interpreting meaning skills. This allows students to explore their own thoughts and make connections to the text.…

Accelerated English 4 has been a class that has been one of my best English classes. The class taught me many new techniques along with improving my skills that I already knew, though not all were improved. My strength in vocabulary was still as high as it was while my ability to transition had improved quite well, though my ability to create a well styled paper was still suffering. When Accelerated English 4 started there was no excitement about the papers I would have to write.…

One strategy is to make it visual. The teacher should not just lecture the whole time and use only the textbook as a visual. English Language Learners have a more difficult time processing spoken language. Use many pictures and gestures to help the students understand and make connections. And modeling what needs to be done and what is expected is very helpful as well, especially for new skills and activities.…

If the class has been given a novel to read, instead of praising them for just finishing the task, we can open up a whole new area of discussion and future projects. We can ask them questions about the characters, storylines, ask them to imagine themselves in the main character’s position. Further to that, art work or history lessons can also be linked to the subject. The possibilities are…

One of my favorite activities in this class so far is the current events assignments. I love how we get to research a recent article that shows historical significance, summarize the article, give our opinions/thoughts on the subject, and share it with our classmates. This activity can help teachers see if students have good research and critical thinking skills. It 's fascinating to read my classmate 's posts so I can learn from what they are showing me. It 's disappointing to…

Made it through another semester This semester I learned that some of us read and write more then we think we on a daily basis. There are different ways of reading and writing outside of the classroom. After we did the reading and writing journals earlier this semester I noticed that I read more then I write in my free time and for class, like text, social media, ESPN updates, books, and flyers.…

A few months ago, when I was still in high school as a Senior I was placed in an AP English course because of the program I was in. The program placed all the students in the course regardless of if they were considered AP English ready. During the course, there were over several writing assignments, each on novels or quotes. However, my teacher kept informing me that my writing needs to improve to reach the college level. Yet I continued to complete assignments without understanding the mistakes, simply to earn the grade for because I turned an essay in.…

I have learned new skills by entering General Education class, which by the way has to be the hardest course I have taken. One of the biggest things that I have learned is that I believe I have been submitting the references incorrect. The proper way to cite a quote is in the following: according to authors Reysen & Katzarska-Miller (2013). “global citizenship as awareness, caring, and embracing cultural diversity while promoting social justice and stability, coupled with a sense of responsibility to act (Snider, Reysen, & Katzarska-Miller, in press)” (p. 860).…

Usually, certain parents and teachers hate to stress seniors on their last year with a lot of work from their classes. The only problems teachers stress about are, senior trips, prom, senior prank, senior cookout, graduation, and college applications. To some, these aspects are actually amusing and exciting rather than…

It feels like so long ago when I first began this English course. I can remember being so excited about the class topic, racism and social justice, which I felt that I had a lot of passion for. Little did I know that I would have to gather up even more enthusiasm and passion to be able to continue writing papers about the same topic all semester long. This course has tested my endurance, and at many times my patience, and for that I am thankful because I know in the end, it has made me a better writer. Despite various minor challenges this semester I believe that I have put in the hard work that it takes and I have achieved the course goals and will complete this class feeling fulfilled and accomplished.…

With the teacher’s help, students work as a group to develop their own story. Accuracy at this stage is not as important as fluency. Positive feedback and encouragement, however, are extremely important, as students need to feel good about themselves. Students are encouraged to write in their journals on a daily basis. It is also important to note that teachers do not need to mark and correct everything the students write.…

My teacher has guided me in reading books by interesting in-class reading resources such as How Reading Changed My Life by Anna Quindlen, and Saved by Malcolm X. I love Anna ’s quote “All of reading is really only finding the ways to name ourselves, and, perhaps, to name the others around us so that they will no longer seem like strangers.” Additionally, Saved by Malcom X gives me inspiration through his homemade education in prison.…
