With functioning that is impaired,adapted behavior, assistance or support with an occurrence before age 18 is the definition that surrounds intellectual disabilities mental retardation, or cognitive disabilities.
A little history by 1917 all but four states had institutions for people with intellectual disabilities. Intellectual functioning is a developmental disability below levels of 97%of the general population, these people are drastically below average and face extreme challenges on a daily basis.
And adaptive behavior is what we use to function in daily life people with cognitive issues do not withhold the skills needed and many of these situations such as eating dressing toileting and mobility.having an active system of supports with friends, family ,coworkers, social services and government agents help manage the four levels of support involved with adaptive behavior. The four levels are intermittent, Limited, extensive, and pervasive ,all levels might not be needed but there are many with all four levels that are almost mandatory in every day
