Celiac Disease is an incurable, genetic disorder that causes people to not be able to digest gluten. When gluten enters the stomach, it causes an immune response in the small intestine. This results in the small intestine being damaged as the immune cells attack the cells of the stomach lining. According to A Healthier Michigan, Celiac Disease is known to cause constipation, bloating, headache, diarrhea, and weight loss (Warra, 2016). Over time it leads to loss of nutrients as the damaged villi, hairlike objects in the small intestine, cannot absorb nutrients and minerals. Fortunately, Celiac disease is a rare condition: Dr. Hyun Seok Kim states that only 1% of the world population are affected by the disorder(Doheny, 2016). In addition, people who are affected by this disorder have higher chances of developing type 1 diabetes, lactose intolerance, and certain autoimmune disorder like arthritis (Medlineplus Celiac Disease, 2016). Going gluten free does not provide enough legitimate benefits to make a huge lifestyle change. In addition, the advantages of going gluten free are only shown toward people who suffer from Celiac disease because their body cannot digest the gluten. Furthermore, the disadvantages of going gluten free outweigh the advantages: nutrients deficiencies, cost of gluten free food, lack of evidence, and various concerns of going gluten free can harm my grandmother’s health than improve it. My main concern about the gluten free diet is the lack of nutrients. My grandmother has a digestive problem in which her body does not absorb enough nutrients and energy; consequently, she has to take supplements to counter the problem. Going gluten free would only cause more problems. Therefore, it is in the best interest that my grandmother avoid the gluten free
