For example there were dental photographs being shown on the video that clearly showed heavy build up of plaque and inflammation of the gums, when discussing periodontal disease. There were also many video clips of patients in the dental office being treated on their teeth by a dentist. This is a great way to show, people who have never been to the dentist, how a cleaning and exam is performed by the dentist or hygienist. Conversely, there was information lacking on other important oral health maintenance. For example, there should have also been a focus on the type of foods that should be avoided, like foods and drinks with a high sugar content, in order to promote good oral health and so people are aware that these types of foods and drinks should be consumed at a minimal level. This chart makes is easy to see the significantly different amount of education time and costs between a Dentist and a Dental Therapist. Additionally, the journal article explains the positive impact that a Dental Therapist can have among underserved populations like Alaskan Natives. Another strength of the article is that is specific as to what duties a Dental Therapist can perform by informing the reader that an additional two years of education would be required to perform major dental procedures like a root canal as long as a supervising Dentist approves the treatment.
