I have the music cranked up in my car listing to my favorite song. I’m in a wonderful mood because I had early sign out and its warm out and at the moment I have no worries in the world. I am cruising along in 5th gear about 60 miles per hour on the road going home from school enjoying the rest of my day. I see a car coming and decide to wave but what kind do I do. There are many types of waves in Iowa because almost everyone waves. I put my hand up and shake it to say, “Hi” even though they can’t hear me. “They must not be from around here” I think. They must be from the city if they didn’t wave back. Most people around small towns will wave back no matter what. There are some instances where someone might not like them or sometime they just didn’t see you. You can tell if it’s those or if there are just to cool to wave.
The nod This is a wave that many people use. It may not be hand gesture but, it is still considered a wave. Some people are "too cool" to wave so they use this instead. It can also be used when you are too busy to wave. Many people use it if they are doing something with their other hand like changing the radio. Truckers or people also use it if they are user guide there other hand to shift their vehicle.
I have seen many people do this in both ways. Sometimes somebody with a nice car you think, "oh nice car I'll wave" but, they are to cool to wave back. In return my reaction is "oh ok" and I think he's too cool to wave back. I have also used this though when I am driving my car or truck that are manuals and I have to shift them so I can't put a hand up.

From the simple to wave, to more complex waves like putting your hand up and shaking it, to the no wave. Everyone in the county waves so there are many different types. There many types of waves that I didn’t mention. Some people always use the same wave no matter who it is. There are used mostly just to say, “Hi” or “how’s it going”. The next time you are driving down the road on a nice sunny 90 degree Iowa day what are you going to do? You won’t be too cool to wave? No you’re going to nod your head throw some fingers over the wheel or raise your hand and give it a shake. Maybe you will have a different

I chose to conduct my observation at Lake Eola Park which is located in the heart of Downtown Orlando FL. The sidewalk that circles the lake makes it easy for people who visit the park to run, walk, relax or picnic. Lake Eola park offers many activities to park visitors and local residents which include: renting swan-shaped paddle boats and duck feeding just to name a few. Swan watching is always a big hit as well as viewing other types of wildlife inhabiting Lake Eola Park. Additionally, the park comes fully equipped with the Walt Disney Amphitheater, which is great for national and local acts to perform.…

I have always had a bad habit of violating social norms whether it be raising my hand to use the bathroom, making loud noises in public, being completely silent when near close friends, or holding the door open at in awkward distance, or in awkward positions. One of my favorite social norms to break has always been awkward eye contact, or when someone else is staring at me, male or female I wink. I enjoy making people feel uncomfortable and violating social norms is the easiest way to do this, it is also the only way to do this. I had to do some thinking of a social norm that I could go against that I already do not break that often, and when I think I tend to fidget with whatever is in my hand. When I started my “Act of Deviance” I was originally just fidgeting with a pen in sociology, and then Lydia Cook started and…

According to the data I gathered, In regard to my original hypothesis, predicting that Symbolic gestures would be the most recounted in the storyline, the following is the only account of that instance. Speaker 4 of Group B naturally engaged her recipient with the gesture, but Speaker 5 did not continue the conventionalized “thumbs up” down the telephone line. Perhaps this is easily explained, as Speaker 4 was the first participant in the group. She watched the original video directly, therefore it was easier for her to keep the gesture fresh in mind as she retold the story. As to why the Symbolic gestures have been unsuccessful as contagious gestures, I cannot can only speculate.…

The presentation about Chapter 18, Behavior in Public Places, talks about general behaviors and common manners around public places in the United States. The presenter divided the behaviors in public places in two parts, rules for behaviors and communication behaviors. I agreed with all the contents the presentation contained. Also, I think these behaviors are all based on the Americans’ values and assumptions. Equality and individualism, which are significant Americans’ values and assumptions, affect the American behaviors in public places.…

As I was violating this social norm, I felt strange and out of place. I had a lot of awkward encounters that day and i think it was because i normally don't stop and start talking to strangers or greet them by using hand gestures. Normally if someone smiles or says hi, i smile back or say or hi and then we both go our separate ways. With this experiment, I would have to stop and greet them in an unusual and personal way.…

Imagine walking into a job interview and not knowing what to do when an employer offers their hand for a handshake. We are socialized to shake hands at a very young age as a way of greeting other people. A handshake can signal respect, as in the case of the employer, you respect them enough to shake their hand upon meeting. It can mean inclusion, as in shaking hands when meeting members of a club you join.…

The Wave is all about types, and Robert Billings is no exception; he's the school loser, to use the novel's rather cruel terminology. Other students in the school are afraid to ruin their own image by hanging out with the “class creep”. Ben Ross thinks that part of his problem is living in the shadow of his ultra-popular brother, who used to attend Gordon High School. When the Wave finally comes along, Robert seizes the opportunity to make a change, but things get even worse. Although some might argue that the Wave has major benefits for Robert, he does not benefit from the Wave because he becomes violent and willing to do anything to change his reputation, finds a way to actually have power over his peers, and loses the ability to rely on…

As I observed the linguistic interaction between dyads I identified a variety of phenomena discussed in class lectures. My observations were taken in three different locations a restaurant, a shopping arena, and at a professor’s office in order to achieve a wide interpretation of the linguistic interaction. My first observation took place at a Mexican restaurant in Rosarito. There were three female and two male involved in the conversation. The setting appeared to be a family dinner.…
