Greetings. Non-verbal communication is paramount in Brazil as a high context culture. The non-verbal communication aspect of the greeting is the majority of the custom. Men generally shake hands and backslap each other upon meeting while women usually kiss each other starting with the left cheek and switching to the right. (Kwintessential, 2016). The translation of “Hello, is everything fine?” in Portuguese is Ola. Tudo bem? And the translation for “How are you?” is Como vai? (Culturegrams, 2011, p. 3). Politeness is very important upon first meeting but the friendliness and informality takes hold as the meetings become more casual and regular. Gender can have a major role in the business world, such as pay rates, job satisfaction, and even productivity. Brazil has not found the equilibrium between the equality of men and women in business. A study on how gender effect the decision making styles of Brazilian people shows that men are much more analytical and consider implications within their business decisions while women consider a more subjective and intuitive decision making style. (Castro, Torres, Nascimento, & Demo, 2015, p. 91).
Manners
Informal greetings, such as backslapping hugs and kisses on cheeks is normal in the business world and is expected. It is polite to enquire about how everyone is doing and a minimal inquisition about personal lives. A polite “How is everything in your life?” is purely acceptable.
Social Structures and Organizations Social Classes. The middle class makes up the majority if the work force in Brazil. This is the largest purchasing group in Brazil and allows for the work force to spend more money on things that make them more productive and efficient, such as IT alternatives and efficiency apps.
