Through the third book club meeting, my role as Literary Luminary brought a palette of both hope and despair. Forbidden City does not bode a happy ending, so neither did our discussions. Magic City was written with the purpose of explaining a black boy’s coming of age and trying to understand the world around him, while growing up in 1950s Louisiana. In each poem Yusef Komunakaa shows the reader snapshots of the narrator’s life and the steps of losing innocence while becoming an adult. He does an excellent job of creating a childlike honesty through out the book. The author creates such brilliant poems that unite to make a holistic view of a young boys’ life. Juliana is a Brazilian-native but traveled frequently to Iraq, Malta, Libya, Spain, France, and the United States. She returned to her home city, Rio de Janeiro after over two entire decades. She is an award winning author who received her bachelor's degrees in Spanish Literature and Journalism from The University of Texas and master's degrees in Latin American studies and journalism from The University of California Berkeley. During the fieldtrip, which was held Thursday, February 22, I have made a lot of realization. Thronateeska and The Flint Riverquarium supplied me with an abundance of information on the Earth and beyond it. Now I have knowledge on how the solar system and the Earth was created, fossils and other science materials, the dangers of plastic, and creatures living amongst us humans. This was a very thrilling experience for me and I can’t wait until I can visit again. The aim of this essay is to discuss the ideas of ‘cosmetics of hunger’ and ‘cosmetics of violence’ in relation to the movie City of God. The 2002 Brazilian film City of God was directed by Fernando Meirelles and co-directed by Kátia Lund. The plot is loosely based on real events as written by Paulo Lins in the novel of the same name. On Saturday, September 9th 2017, my hiking class met up at Mount Royal for the first hike of the semester. A description of my experience follows. To begin with, I came physically and mentally well prepared to the course.
