On Saturday, September 9th 2017, my hiking class met up at Mount Royal for the first hike of the semester. A description of my experience follows. To begin with, I came physically and mentally well prepared to the course. Hiking is familiar to me, as I frequently hike mountains with family and friends, so I know how to prepared myself in order to spend some quality time in nature. My house is located at the bottom of Mount St-Bruno and I sometimes run up and down the mountain. The day before the class, I had my sportive bag packed with useful items, based on the list given by the teacher, the announced weather, as well as my own knowledge about hiking equipment. Thus, I went to bed early, so as to have at least eight hours of sleep, and I …show more content…
In the morning, the temperature was cool and it got warmer around noon. The sun made me smile all day and warmed ourselves up! I was really comfortable and my equipment was appropriate. Also, the trail was in good condition and no negative environmental factors troubled the journey. Regarding the group morale, I thought that my fellow students were sympathic, enthusiatic and motivated. We stayed concentrated on our task of answering questions and looked for consensus prior to making decisions. For example, we sked ourselves where we were at on the map few times. To find our position, we stopped and discussed all together about where we shoud go next. However, I thought that the pace of the group was slower than mine. I expected to walk faster and stop only sometimes to fill out the team answer sheet and take a sip of water meanwhile. For instance, when we climbed up the stairs from Peel to the Main Chalet, we waited about five minutes for all the team to be on top. I would have prefer to join at team which pace was similar to mine, so as to choose the intensity of the hike, even though I really liked hiking with Team #1! I met some new people and we shared a good time all together. It was pleasant to have such a good …show more content…
I learned much in both the geographical and historical domains. First, the objective of the day was to follow a given path on a map of the mountain and its surroundings. Thus, we developed our sense of direction. I know that I have difficulties to locate myself in a given place and I have always wanted to improve myself in that particular ability. Hence, Mount Royal hike provided me a great opportunity to practice my orientation skills. As a group, it was interesting to exchange and debate in order to find our way. For instance, we had some trouble finding the CBC tour and the small lookout. We argued and looked at the map many times, as some thought we had skipped it and others were still looking for it… We tried to determine geographical landmarks in order to match the map with where we were at that moment in time. Besides, this first hike has been very useful for me, since I will certainly return to Mount Royal with friends and I will then feel now more familiar to the geography of the mountain and its surroundings. Second, Mount Royal is a historical site and by looking for answers to our questions, we read plenty of new informations related to historical figures and locations associated to the mountain. I have always felt like I could know more about Montreal and the important people that contributed to its development. I particularly enjoyed learning about my city in an active

Madison would be like. We set out unable to see the summit, scrambling over rocks while cairn after cairn led us on. August didn’t prevent the need for us to don jackets and gloves as we got higher and higher and the wind grew steadier and more fierce. I became afraid to look at anything except what was directly in front of me. This was the first of many times that I was realizing what one wrong step could mean, which is such a part of the adventure of the White Mountains.…

I want to become a Naval Officer because of the people I have met. The American Legion Post 360 is the sponsor for the local Boy Scout troop and working with those members is what made me want to become a Naval Officer. The members of the Legion were wonderful to work with, and when I worked with them they did not focus on themselves. They focused on what they could do to help the project. This attitude is one I would like to have and becoming an officer paves that way as its goal is to create people who focus on completing the project.…

A city with an area measuring 3,255 miles squared and lying on the Gastineau Channel, Juneau, Alaska captured my breath and left me speechless. For some Juneau is a venue to buy trinkets and take family pictures for the Christmas card. For others Juneau is a place to hunt vicious black bears or reel in an Artic Char. For me Juneau, Alaska is significant for it allowed me to strengthen in my faith and believe God created the Earth we live on. Foremost, the sky was foggy, and the air was chilly, with a brisk wind blowing around.…

I once went on a hike on the Appalachian Trail with my mother. We set off and it started to rain on the first day, and my mom began to complain. By the end of the day, I wanted to jump off the mountain before I pushed her off it. Suffice to say, we were not well-suited hiking partners, due to our different processes; my mother dealt with her grievances by talking about the cold. On the other hand, I was just as miserable, but I attempted to ignore the dismal weather.…

Our counselors had to scope out where our campsite was, which they finally found by a exquisite blue lake. It felt so good to empty our packs and stretch. After waking at midnight to start our summit in order to beat the possible rainstorms, we were off to climb Mt. Massive, the second tallest mountain in Colorado. Climbing rocks with heavy backpacks, crossing rivers, bushwhacking about 3 and a half miles, and dealing with heavy winds that almost blew us over, we finally found the trail!…

It was a definite change of scenery to be immersed in nature with lush greenery, crisp air, and ocean views instead of the normal classroom scene. I liked that this experience was a chance to interact with my colleagues and learn who they are on a personal level subsequent to grading their three-minute stories the previous Fridays. From this hiking experience, I learned the value of teamwork, effective communication, and what encompasses wholesome leadership as well as what can transpire when there is no leadership. As like all experiences, there are some parts I cherished and others not as much.…

I never did any research about the areas on prior hikes. The information gave me landmarks to anticipate, which helps alleviate any anxiety about being in the correct place.
