Essay #2
In my hypothetical team of three, there are three people from three different countries, Tony from the U.S., Maki from Japan, and me from China. We are assigned for a group project for a new TV show proposal in a global company and we have never met each other before. In some areas, we could share common ground and make agreement. But in most of time, we would face conflicts and misunderstanding caused by different cultural norms. In that case, we would try to find out efficient solutions in order to keep our team works.
As we are coming from different countries with different cultural backgrounds, we would face many conflicts caused by misunderstandings.
As we begin to try to build trusts between each other, we would choose different ways. Maki and I may choose to have dinner together because our culture norms for trust building are relationship-based, which means we prefer to build trust through social activities such as having dinner together. At the same time, Tony may prefer to build trust by letting us working together as his cultural norm for building trusts is more task based. Maki and I would like to communicate with others in a more high, which means our messages are implicit, sophisticated, complicated and layered, which also needs the listeners to think about the deeper level meaning of our words. However, Tony may deliver his message in a more low-context way, which means his words are quite simple, explicit and the listener can just understand it from the surface level. In this case, Maki and I would be encouraged to express our thought more explicitly and Tony would be encouraged to think about our words in a much deeper way in order to understand our message
