Once again, with Jonas’ face buried deep in the bed of the Annex, The Giver placed his cool hands on the back of Jonas. “Are you sure you want this memory?” questioned a concerned Giver. Jonas responded, “I'm as ready as I'll ever be,” as he wiped off his sweaty hands. “Good, because this is one of my least favorite memories of all time. Get ready, this will be a painful one. It won't mess with your body too much, but it will twist your mind in half.” The Giver warned. Jonas felt his mind shift, he was in a place he had never seen before. He lay on top of an old squeaky bed. Dirty cement walls surrounded him. Tiny goosebumps rose on Jonas’ arm as a cool breeze chilled his skin. Footsteps pounded down the hallway outside of the rusty cage door. A broad man in a uniform yelled unwittingly, “Get up! Time for breakfast! No messing around, get to the cafeteria. I'm watching you!” …show more content…
He sluggishly stepped down the hall as the lights flickered on and off. When he arrived at the cafeteria, one by one the men, in bright orange uniforms, slowly walked down the line. The cook plopped a mushy ball of food onto the trays. When Jonas received his food, couldn't even tell what it was. Jonas gagged repeatedly, barely even having the energy. That horrible instant was when two new words popped up in his mind. Jail. Depression. Sitting down, Jonas peered out the cage window. He saw open land, with trees, flowers, rivers, sunshine, and a hill. Though it was the middle of summer, he could see a faint outline of a sled. A sled that was meant for fun. A sled that was meant to withstand the worst bumps and the worst ice. A sled that was for Jonas. A sled- that Jonas knew he could never get
