Being selected Receiver of Memory is a punishment to whoever is selected to be it. The reason why is that, is that you are exposed to new feelings like love, pain, etc. Jonas learned about that and learned about the lies told by the community of elders. Finally the job is almost pointless because the only thing you do is give advice to the elders so they can make decisions. This essay will explain the reason why it is a punishment to be selected as Receiver of Memory. Jonas learned about the lies that the elders have told him and the community. In the book Jonas is trained to handle the painful memories he will have to overcome. On accident, the Giver gives him the memory of war. He is terrified after receiving the memory. According to the text, Page 114, it states, “The Giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done to Jonas. “Forgive me,” he said.” Consequently, there were some good memories. The Giver’s favorite memory was the memory of Christmas. There were also bad ones too. According to the text, it states, “He had seen a birthday party, with one child singled out and celebrated on his day.” (Pg. 132) Conversely, the birthday party reminds him of what he doesn’t have. It makes him think about how sameness is bad. During Jonas’s training, he receives the memory of love and he also stops taking the medication he was supposed to take. According to the text, on page 124, it states, “Jonas did, about precision of language, Jonas realized that it was a new depth of feelings that he was experiencing.” The Giver helped Jonas perceive this new feeling called, “love”. That evening when he was enjoying dinner with his parents he asked if they loved him. His parents scolded him for using such a pointless word, which it really wasn’t. They just didn’t understand it. According to the text, “The man corrected him. “Honor,” he said firmly. “I have great honor. So will you.
