Kobe looked out over the horizon as the Colorado sun began to set and wondered if his feeling of helplessness and lost hope would ever seize to exist. It was December 7th, 1997, “it has only been 7 months” he thought out loud to himself. Kobe sat on the ledge of the cliff, missing his father more and more each day, he missed his laugh and the way he smiled at his son every time Kobe scored in a basketball game, he missed fishing with his father, and watching football on Sunday afternoons, but most of all he missed his best friend. Kobe had begun to struggle in school and sports, his family and friends were worried about him and Kobe was quiet, he sat isolated at lunch and never spoke during practice. Making the decision to play basketball was hard for Kobe, his father loved basketball and played in college, “this is what my father would want” he had

Kobe sat, watching as the last streams of light fell over the edge of the mountains, Kobe knew his father was watching him and that he would always be there, but that just wasn’t enough. “I need him” Kobe shouted, “How could you take him away from me” Kobe paced back and forth yelling and cursing, he had enough, Kobe stepped back, laid down his bag and began to run. “Kobe” yelled his younger brother Mat, “Sarah told me you might be here and I… I…wanted to come talk to you, I miss dad and I know you do too.” Kobe stopped at the edge of the cliff and turned to face Mat, eyes red and heart pounding, with a shaky voice he said, “Mat,” Kobe paused to catch his breath, “have you ever just stopped to look at the stars?” Mat didn’t speak, he walked closer to Kobe until he could smell his strong evergreen cologne and wrapped his arms around his solid figured older brother for the first time in 7 months. “I missed you voice, Kobe.” The two brothers stood there for a while and then lay together on the rocks counting the stars and exchanging words trying to remember all they could about
