Core 100 Class Reflection

Spring Arbor University makes a big deal about their Core classes, but at times it feels like they are a joke. Then students begin to realize the purpose behind all of it. Core 100 is a class designed to get the college career started off with the correct footing. The activities and events that affected my life the most were the Monday lectures, the Real Relationships readings, and the in class discussions. None of these alone would have been sufficient, but in tandem they provide an illuminating education into how our interactions with others shape who we are and what we become. The Monday lectures were probably what I was most skeptical about going into Core, but they proved to be enlightening experiences. It was enticing to hear viewpoints from adults of diverse origins and backgrounds. I feared that I would be …show more content…
The authors wrote about the three R’s of family, rules, roles, and relationships. I never realized how the rules my family subliminally enforced change my interaction with the people around me, like arguing is okay even in public situations. Every family member has a role that they fill, whether it be positive, like the “comedian”, or negative, like the “victim”. I am identifying some of the roles that I fill in my family, such as the problem-solver. Then the relationship your parents had with each other forms the expectations you have for your future spouse. For those of the opposite gender that you do not plan on making your spouse, there is a great deal of intentionality that needs to happen in order to have a positive platonic relationship. The most important thing to do is to understand how men and women are different from each other and appreciate those qualities without taking advantage of them. What the book had to say was splendid, but what made it even better were the in class discussions we had about each

“It would be nice if she could let this genius know about this one little flaw in this perfect plan for taking care of women in their old age” (Esquivel 11) This quote is an example of how traditions do not always benefit the majority. Traditions can bring the family together, and create a sense of communion with the family. Each tradition has a role within the family, whether to create a sense of togetherness, or if to imprison the other family members. These traditions play a vital role in the novel, and change throughout the growth and decrease of the family.…

Being a 16-year –old, and having taken my first semester of college classes this semester with my high school classes on top of that, all here at CSN, has been an unforgettable experience. On the other hand, from the three college classes I have enrolled in, including German 111, Communications 101, and Anthropology 101, I have, in my opinion, learned the most with my Anthropology 101 class. This class has been a great and interesting experience that has allowed me to view the world in a different way than most people. To illustrate, even though I thought most of the things we discussed in class like linguistics and archaeology were interesting, I consider learning about ethnology the most memorable and fascinating concept for me. To illustrate,…

In society, a family is made up of two or more members, that can be related by blood, marriage, or adoption. But around the world some people have a family that is different from other's based on the way their culture has taught them to be. A better way to understand the meaning of family is to apply the three major sociological theories. The first theory is the Functionalist by Emile Durkheim which explains that society has to follow certain functions and how the basic needs are helpful to live in any kind of society there is in this world. The way to understand this theory by applying it to family is the incest taboo that makes mandatory to look for a partner from a different family that is not your own.…

The underlying expectation growing up for a girl is that she will meet a boy who will sweep her off her feet, fall madly in love, then follow the conventional cycle of getting married, having kids, and living happily ever after. The hope of attaining a relationship of such a scenario quickly comes to an end after having kids. In the essay, “The Myth of Co-Parenting: How it was Supposed to Be. How it Was.,” by Hope Edelman, she conveys her rationale on why co-parenting doesn’t occur, as well as the struggle to overcome the pre-determined ‘gender roles’ within a marriage through an anecdote of her personal experiences with her husband, John. Edelman asserts the downfall of her marriage took place when they unintentionally conformed to the stereotypical…

I knew Red Lobster was a bad option. I wanted to go to Outback Steakhouse, but mom had her way, even on MY high school graduation. I was stuck, sitting in the booth, waitress staring at me for 15, 16, 17 seconds now. Sitting in my cap and gown, she asked again – “where are you going to college?” I’d prefer the Bloomin’ Onion to this any day of the week.…

It’s hard to tell where to start when it comes to my experience with SEI. As I reflect on this class and my own career there has been real dichotomy of sorts. In the first half of my career I spent in a very culturally diverse community of Stoughton which had a very high ELL population with little no built in supports for teachers. In the second half of my career in East Bridgewater, there is a very low level of ELL’s with much more support. The biggest take away that I have from this course and my time in the classroom, is there are a number of tools available to teach children with a variety of strengths and weaknesses.…

What are some of the main causes of tension between family members? Are the causes related to societal expectations, cultural expectations, or personal pride? Or maybe it is a combination of all of these causes? How these external and internal conflicts can affect the relationship among family members is noticeable in the short stories, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and “The Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan. In both, “Harrison Bergeron,” and “The Rules of the Game,” the impact of these struggles can be seen between the relationships of the parents and their children; Harrison’s parents, in “Harrison Bergeron,” show indifference towards how societal beliefs affect their son while Mrs. Jong, in “Rules of the Game,” favors cultural expectations…

Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…

Coming in to taking this VUSM class I thought it would just be another required VUSM that I just wanted to get through and get an easy A. This class not only taught me about people who lived differently than me, but it gave me the chance to put myself into somebody else’s shoes in ways I never would have done without this class. Other VUSM classes require you to find a place to volunteer at and count a certain amount of hours and those places are nice and you have the possibility to learn a lot about things, but the way Frank Kronke set up this class it made you learn a lot more about yourself as a person than it did anything else. We learned about how we view the world and the power we have to change things that need changing. We learned a…

The lessons the workshop taught the children that went through it was invaluable. We hope that we as adults show our children learn from us the mistakes of the past and treat people equally. A lot of times unfortunately people have stigmata’s either put on them by society because of how they look or they put them on themselves and people treat them differently. The lessons that this workshop teaches are lessons that everyone should have. You can spend our entire life trying to instill the values in your children that this class does in two days, and I want my children to be kind to people as we all do; I do not want them to ALIENATE someone because they are not the same as them, different ETHNITICIY or part of a MINORITY GROUP.…

I also agree with the author’s point of view about how traditional family is mythological. The reason I agree with the her is that our society changes according to time. Also today society is all about privacy, unlike in the 1900s most people lived in a joint family and went everywhere with their family. Today we basically do what we want with or without our family. One way we can fix marriage problems is to have programs that teaches people on what and what not to say and do in a certain situation when you have a problem.…
