There was only one guy in the second group that we talked to who was the first one in his family who has been to jail, that he knew of because his father was never in the picture. There was one man there named Craig who did a lot of the talking. In his bias opinion, the jail was not simply a removal from society but it has been turning into a punishment. He explained this to us and though the chaplain had to correct a few of his facts, he did seem to make a few valid points. One of his biggest complaints and an example of how the jail is punishing the inmates is that the lights are kept on 24/7. He claimed that it was very hard to sleep with the lights on all through the night, and it would even be beneficial to the jail because it would save electricity costs. In the jails defense though which the chaplain explained to us after the inmates left, the lights are kept on to keep control of the inmates so that the guards are able to see inside the cells at night to make sure everyone is being smart and safe. Although seeing both sides of the argument, it made me think about how the jail system is considered punishment or simply a removal from society.
