This paper compares the speeches on the Long March from CCP party leaders Jiang Zeming in 1996 and Xi Jingping in 2016. In this paper I would like to make basic analysis of the two speeches in terms of structure, and point out the changes between these two speeches.
To begin, I would like to point out the major differences between the two speeches. The first, and most apparent difference is the length, Jiang’s speech is much shorter than Xi’s speech with only three pages ,while Xi’s is around eight pages. The most obvious change is about the importance of “People”. In Jiang’s speech, he did mention that people are important, but just about a paragraph, he didn’t mention much about to rely on people for nowadays Long March.[ Jiang 1996, line78~82] In Jiang’s speech, it seems that “Party(CCP)” is much more important, as can be seen in the paragraph about the new Long March.[ Jiang 1996, line 84~88] However, in Xi’s speech, he strongly focused on the importance of people, both for the Long March in 1930s and the Long March nowadays, he also mentioned that the party need to insist the mass line and keep blood-flesh relationship with the mass.[ Xi 2016, line 201] Moreover, when Xi said about the party, he usually refers to “the people(member) of the party” instead of “the party”.[ Xi 2016, line 39,43,47,105,112,155~156, 178] Another major change is how they describe the Long March of today, in Jiang’s speech, he mention the new mission of economic construction as what to fight for as nowadays’ Long March.[ Jiang 1996, line 97~100] In Xi’s speech, he created a new mission or discourse as the mission for nowadays’ Long March, which includes the revival of Chinese nationality, the strong military that equals China’s status in the world, and the Chinese dream.[ Xi 2016, line 132 ~133, 228~229] It seems that Xi cares more about the mass, the nationality and Chinese dream, the new discourse created by Xi. It is possible that, by putting emphasis on the mass and Chinese Dream, it could make people feel they
