The Homeless: Then and Now During the 1930’s the number of homeless people raised drastically due to the stock market crash of 1929. In present day, populations are surrounded by homeless no matter the location. This is not saying that most of the world is homeless, but a vast part of large cities are made up of homeless people. When the stock market crashed in 1929, people had an “excuse” as to of why there were homeless, but now is there such an “excuse”? When the housing market crashed in 2006, there was another rise in the homeless population, but not as great as the rise when the stock market crashed; however, since the housing market crashed a decade ago that leaves plenty of “recovery time” so that is not much of an “excuse”.
