The Connection Between Madonna and Child
Artistic styles and techniques will always continue to develop and change as time passes years and even centuries however, not even the passage of time can change the overall meaning and emotion that an artist initially establishes within their own original works of art. Through the interpretation of religious symbolism, a work of art from centuries past can be viewed and understood today. Using symbolism in art, allows multiple artists to take similar ideas, using their own artistic style and techniques and still create a work that is individually seen as their own and not a copy. It’s not until the viewer considers the details of both Mary and her baby’s garments, where the lines soften to show fluidity in the falling folds of the jewel-tone garment fabrics, another clear indication of Duccio’s work. Using color and light, the artist then draws attention to Mary’s gaze in this painting, by brightening the tone of Mary’s skin on the bridge of her nose and slightly in her cheeks. It’s then that the viewer can see and begin to sense the strong connection, the maternal bond between Mary and her baby. In the later painting, Madonna and Child, by an unknown follower of Rogier, the artist takes care in the use of both hard and soft lines in the outline of mother and child and with the additional use of light and shading to ensure that the figures of both mother and child are not lost in the unknown darkness that rests in the background of the painting. Like Duccio, this artist has also taken great care to master the detail in creating flowing folds of the cloth, to ensure depth and dimension are respected and
