The Proto-Renaissance period began in the early 13th century in Northern Italy, where artists started to move away from the rigid Medieval style towards a more realistic Renaissance style. Proto-Renaissance has more natural light and modelling, leading to paintings that look more realistic. Figures now look heavy and fill out their clothing, rather than just looking like paper cut outs. Paintings are simple, uncluttered and have a spiritual and physical gravity. (Ruf Rice, 2015) Paintings like Cimabue’s Santa Trinita Madonna and Giotto’s Ognissanti Madonna illustrate this gradual move into the Renaissance period. (Art History, 2015)

The Santa Trinita Madonna was painted in 1280 to 1290 by the Italian artist, Cimabue, with tempera and gold leaf on a wood panel. It’s said to be commissioned by the Vallumbrosan monks for the main altar of the Santa Trinita church in Florence. (Virtual Uffizi, 2015) This is a standard subject of the Madonna Enthroned. Giotto renders the body in its naturalistic proportions, figures are grounded, have three dimensionality to them, look solid and substantial and features are naturalistic. For example Cimabue’s Christ has a small head in comparison to his body and he has the facial features of an older man, where Giotto’s Christ has realistic proportions, he is rendered as a young child and no-one is literally above him, emphasizing his

Even though hair is pushed back, you can tell that it is long. Her expression is very loving and caring towards Jesus (as many artworks display her in this style). The young Jesus Christ lower half is covered by a blanket or a piece of Mary’s robe and you can see the outline shape of his foot. His top half is uncovered and he stretches out his right hand to touch his mother’s face in a loving, playful manner. He has short and curly hair and he has a resemblance of a young angel.…

Unlike the Byzantine figures, Giotto’s figures had physicality due to him adding modeling of light and dark shadowing and offering gestures that were more natural. His figures clothed in drapery were more form fitting and flowed in the direction that they were being pulled. The way that Giotto positioned the figures told a story and conveyed…

The religious scenes became more realistic and proportioned. The anatomy of the people within the paintings and sculptures of Italian Renaissance work appear scientifically correct and the scenes of the paintings have depth. Italian Renaissance artists used linear or one-point perspective to render proportioned work. An example is Holy Trinity and Tribute Money by Masaccio. In Masaccio’s work, there are vanishing points, orthogonals, a horizon lines, and foreshortening and atmosphere perspective used to give the viewer a realistic idea of the…

With the Renaissance we saw the comeback of the idea of Humanism, where they saw a crowning achievement in human progress, it encouraged the learning of human beings, emphasizing human potential to attain excellence. It promoted the study of literature, art, poetry, and the civilizations of classical Greece and Rome. Instead of the older world view, where art that didn’t depict religious stories or ideals- was seen as glorifying human achievement, which in turn is taking away from the glory of God. Some examples are, Cimabue, titled Virgin and Child Enthroned, c. 1280. The picture is clearly awkward, and not realistic in any sense.…

Duccio refuses to abandon Byzantine prototypes while still presenting the novel idea of spatial continuity without obsessing over absolute realism. Giotto, on the other hand, abandons medieval style and detail and focuses on absolute realism . This distinct difference is expressed in the comparison between their respective portrayals of the Entry into Jerusalem. In Duccio’s rendering, Christ and other’s dispositions still reflect Byzantine heritage in the ornate detail and lack of real body weight. Duccio shows Christ climbing up a hill to enter the city.…

It caught my eye because even though it was created in during the Renaissance; it still has a lot of details, beautiful colors, and meaning. The throne that Madonna is sitting on, and the entire wall behind her is beautiful.…

Christ is painted in the foreground surround by apostles and citizens painted in the technique called fresco. Another comparison of the two pieces are the way the viewer sees the figures. Giotto places his main subjects in the foreground, which brings attention forward compared to the Arrival in Bethlehem, where all the figures are scaled down so the landscape is the main focus. Another example of different exemplification of Christ Entering Jerusalem is Duccio’s tempera on panel. Duccio painted Christ and the apostles to the left and scaled the citizens up and around the bend of the road to the right of the painting.…
