Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. I soon discovered that my checks bounced and I've incurred $75 in bounced check fees. As a freshman, in 2014, I attended the first few technique courses clueless about adapting to them and writing collegiate papers. Coming from a background of mainly jazz and tap, I knew I would face challenges while learning modern and ballet techniques. Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. Written language is a trait known to be only possessed by mankind. Although other species may have audible forms of communication, man is able to record and document his thoughts, feelings, or events that have unfolded in a way that can be viewed multiple times without him having to use his voice over and over. Literacy is a skill that adults in the United States are expected to have; but the level of your literacy says a lot about you and can have a tremendous impact on what career you end up in. When most people think of a history class they imagine sitting in a dark lecture hall taking notes off a PowerPoint presentation, memorizing a few dates and people, repeating it on the test. Truly studying history, I learned, is more than memorization of a previously told story and accepting it as true. In this class I have learned history is about actively engaging the material, picking apart the details and nuances, creating and using timelines, finding deeper meaning in the material, asking questions, then looking again and digging deeper. Part A. To create an excellent lesson plan on expository writing, I must self regulate my learning process, beginning in the forethought my setting a goal for my task. First off, I would like to once again thank you for reading my e-Portfolio and my cover letter, it means a lot to me that someone is taking time out of their day, even if they do not have a choice, to read my work over all the other wonderful e-Portfolios that have been created for this class. For me, Writing 102 was a way for me to learn how I can take my existant writing skills and apply them to a style and format more befitting of a college student. The most important thing that I learned from my UNI class is that I do not have it all figured out. Most people, including myself, believe they have everything figured out in the world. However, that normally ends up in a terrible wakeup call when I think I know something but in reality I don’t.
