College Composition Reflection

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization. I had never considered development and critical thinking as a strength before, but after the essays in this class, I developed some confidence that I had a solid understanding of those concepts. …show more content…
For the narrative, I had no problem writing, since everything was my own words. However, for the third essay, the research paper, it took time to find anything relevant to my argument, and moreover, it took time to actually like my topic, since it wasn’t what I wanted to do. The research took a large portion of my time, but the actual writing wasn’t too complicated. Although the increase in minimum word count became overwhelming at times, the work time in class allowed me to manage my time well, not needing to work a lot outside of school. I never procrastinated, and didn’t have to rush the night before it was due. Regardless, I do wish that I would have started outside of class earlier, so that I could have spent more time for editing and checking for details. Time management was something I noticed most for the second essay, the visual text analysis. Finding a interesting text was hard, and finding reliable secondary sources was even harder, even with the Columbus State Online Database. Although some researching took place outside of school, most of the actual essay writing took place in school during the work days. Even with the unexpected amount of research that I had, managing time was not a great concern for me. Having quiet work time was great, and the time given was about right, getting a decent portion done at school. Considering my other English classes that required a lot of work outside of school, having the work days made my time management more

In the article What is “Academic” Writing by L. Lennie Irvin, a personal connection made was in his statement, “As a new college student, you may have a lot of anxiety and questions about the writing you’ll do in college”(Irvin 3) and “[This will be your] only class(es)... where you will only focus on learning how to write”(Irvin 3). Indeed, as a college student in high school, my body shivers at the sound of the word ‘essay’; however, with the right teaching, I have come a long way. Assuredly, in class we have only focused on writing ethics, which in turn has helped me practice to strengthen my writing skills. Although writing essays can at times trigger my anxiety due to cluelessness and countless questions, as essays go by, I become more…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

By examining the target audience, the writer receives an indication of the appropriate style and formality that best suits the audience and event. Viewing the past four essays shows the progress and decline of my writing style, and structure. The four essays that were required by the class varied from the best to the worst, both having their similarities and differences. Choosing two out of the four essays, I came to a conclusion that the “process analysis” essay was the best, and the worst essay was the “descriptive” essay. Although it varied from their definitions and structure, the essay’s showed how much the writer, put their work into it. The certain characteristics that made it the worst to the best defined how well the essay would turn out to be.…

Surviving English Comp 1 Writing Class Writing is one thing I hate the most. It was hard to write an essay for the first time because I did not have the knowledge or concept of this writing style. Before this class, I thought I knew what writing was all about by expressing my thoughts, ideas and feeling. I know now that I had the wrong concept on how to write. I can express my thoughts, ideas and feeling, but if I put them in the wrong contents it does not lead the reader to the point of the essay.…

The scholarship essay was a very important essay that I am glad I learned how to write, and I am relieved to now have prior knowledge about the essay before writing all of my own. At the beginning of the semester, when you showed us the past students’ responses, procrastination was in almost every response. Procrastination seemed to be a slight problem when writing my papers, but I also found that I had difficulty writing my papers in class around my peers. I was distracted easily which is not an aid in writing papers.…

    College Writing Failure

As a college student, or student in general, it is very easy for me to second guess my abilities or become overwhelmed at the prospect of being graded on skills that seem difficult to grasp in writing, but I have managed to start college without these preeminent dispositions. Throughout high school, my very strict, magnet teachers forced me to step out my comfort zone enabling me to be more open about writing in general. Even though I am certainly far from perfect, without these experiences and realizations over the years, I would have found this and many other writing assignments daunting and nearly impossible. In my freshman year of high school, I undeniably doubted my writing skills due to the fact that even then my grammar and spelling were nearly horrific.…

In collegiate level writing, there are quite a few more things to consider than just the grammar and overall syntax of your essay. Coming into college, I thought I knew everything I needed to know about writing and any essay a professor put in front of me would be a breeze. Unfortunately, I was sadly mistaken. Although my extensive writing practices and assignments allowed me to be able to see the course in its entirety, the theme and workflow of college-level writing involves a great deal more than one would expect. For example, the studies and works of writing experts, such as Elizabeth Wardle, Donna Kain, James Porter, Marilyn Cooper, Carol Berkenkotter, Thomas Huckin, and James Paul Gee demonstrate the extensive nature of writing practices…

For most of my essays, I decided to wait until the last minute to write them since that is what I do with most of my homework. I do not typically work well in class because I cannot focus with any distractions. This eliminated considerable chunks of time that I could have progressed in my writing. If I would have put more effort into the essays right away I think that I could have worked out most of the minor errors that were still present in some of my final drafts. Voice and style were rather prevalent in my essays.…

Before I took the step into a college writing class we had already been drilled in high school by our English teacher Mr Gould. Noble High school really took writing and citing sources seriously, so some things I was taught in my college writing class wasn't really new to me. I feel as if Noble was preparing us for college, so we weren't lost. My senior year of high school, we were required to write an APA research paper and an MLA research paper on a historical topic of my choice. So when it comes to writing long papers i'm no stranger to it, it almost feels normal now and isn't that scary.…

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. Although it was my favorite, it was definitely not my best. I wrote my essay and felt like it was complete and worthy to turn in. Little did I know that was not the case.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

Throughout this course there has been many obstacles that got in the way of my writing. When I first came into this course I was average at writing papers, although I did find that I had a difficult time incorporating the text or planning my ideas out in such a way that was organized and put together. As I went and did revisions on my first two essays I noticed that I was missing words between punctuation and had run-on sentences. These were simple mistakes, the mistakes that were harder for me to fix were the ones that incorporated the text and the meaning. Understanding these complex essays in The Ways of Reading, was the hard part for me to be able to create a well organized essay on my thoughts.…

I was proud of myself that I could be able to write ten pages or even more without thinking or brainstorming. The length requirement for the third essay was only 6-10 pages. I was laughing when seeing that requirement. But then, during week 7th, it was the time that I started writing an essay about the topic “What Is Home.” I was happily saying to myself, “Okay, let’s get it done by tonight and let’s enjoy my life for the rest of the quarter without worrying about writing.”…
