One of the most important preparations is an athlete’s confidence. Self-confidence is “belief in one’s powers and a state of assurance exuded by every great athlete, such as Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus, Roger Clemens, Wayne Gretzky, Nadia Comaneci, and Serena Williams” (Leith, 2008, p. 18). These great athletes all believe in their skills and abilities, which is considered a good thing in competitive sports. Confidence, many times, is the difference between being a good athlete or the best athlete, the difference between failure and…

Coach Wooden, in this reading, teaches me and many others who read how you can’t just wish for success, being successful is something you have to work at every day. Also, not only working everyday like getting more practice and more repetition, that is not what Coach Wooden is trying to teach here he teaches that being successful comes from inside. He explains how in order to be successful you have to have traits like loyalty, self control, confidence, cooperation, and of course skill. Reading about Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success is really something I agree with 100%, I am not sure if it is because I am also an athlete so I am able to relate to his motivation and his way of words. I mainly agree, because he is right about all that he says everything he mentions in the pyramid are all things you not only need to be a successful athlete, but to be a successful person which is why I agree with what Coach Wooden has to say so much, because anyone can read this book and learn from it not just…

The aforementioned training regime was a necessary price to pay if I ever hoped to improve and outperform peers, and I stayed dedicated to it from the beginning. Because of this, I grew accustomed to the ring of the victory bell and the satisfying validation that came from it. However, after many years of relentless training and competition, what has taught me most is not the split-second touch of victory, but the long stretch of perpetual failure. At the age of sixteen my athletic improvement became halted without explanation in a sport in which the sole purpose is to outperform the athlete you had been in the race before.…

My Cross Country/Track coach is one of the best men I know. He not only betters his runners by teaching us, but he also runs with us. Pushing us to greatness with words of encouragement, he implores us to leave all energy on the course/track and teaches us to be exceptional people outside of running. He expresses to us that no matter what we do, he will always be proud of each member of the team; therefore, our actions can’t change his love for us. That’s why it was devastating when he told us before the past track season, that he would not be able to coach for the remainder of the running season from February until we initiated winter conditioning November.…

This passion of mine as well as her continual support has carried me through the difficulties of my grandfather’s death, my parents’ divorce, and other strenuous circumstances including the end of her time as my coach. Coaches have the power to change lives. I can humbly say this as all my coaches, both good and bad, have taught me in some way what it takes to be a good athlete and most importantly how to be a good human being. They have taught me life lessons that I can only hope to preserve by instilling them into my athletes in my time as a coach. The articles I have chosen to highlight in this essay show how coaches have helped to develop character in athletes, how they pushed them to be the best on and off the field of play, and illustrate how they stepped into the lives of athletes and became so much more than just a coach.…
