Coach Olson Essay

A Coach or an Inspiration? Even though my track and cross-country coach, Mr. Olson, may not have realized it, he has made me a better person throughout my high school career. His consistent positive attitude and the way he believes in people has changed how I see things. Sadly, I only have one more track season left with his direction. Without his influence I don’t believe my high school running career, let alone my high school experience, will not be as gratifying or memorable. The most important impact he has made on my attitude is his positivity. Because of his encouragement every practice worth going to, and I know I’m always going to get something out of it. For example, when it is a day where the weather isn’t on our side, he says, “What a great day to run!” Just by hearing this famous phrase, it sticks with me, which makes practice a little less harder to endure. Then, when it’s a day that we have a tough practice, all he has to do is give one of his legendary pep talks to motivate. He really has to bring out his positive mindset when it’s a hill workout. In between sets he brings out our greatness by telling us it’s a choice to keep fighting or to give in to the negative thoughts in our head. We are always capable of more than we …show more content…
He has always believed in me, along with my teammates, through everything. Because of him, I know my leadership skills have improved. I don’t think I could have led our track and cross-country teams, if it wasn’t for what he taught me about believing in myself, and my team. His constant encouraging during my races is the only noise I can hear. Even at State Track where there were thousands of people in the stands, his voice was the only one I could hear. The phrase I always picked out is: “Go Brittany, go!” It’s something I look forward to hearing when I run every single race. It lets me know that he believes in me, and my running

I would like to recognize Jed Smith as an exceptional individual as well as collegiate strength and conditioning coach. His knowledge, personality, and altruistic character led the University of Northern Iowa to new heights. I was a student-athlete at the University of Northern Iowa majoring in Exercise Science when Jed became the head strength and conditioning coach. Jed started a tradition and foundation at UNI on an academic level as well as athletic. Academically, he worked closely with the exercise science department to put more of an emphasis on strength and conditioning as a profession, which further led to both of my degrees in Exercise Science (i.e., M.A. and B.A.).…

At some point in time in their development, most people encounter an adult figure, who instills a positive change in their lives. For me, that person was Cindy Scannella--my track and my cross country coach for my first two years of high school. With her unique approach to coaching, Coach Scannella not only gave me the confidence to flourish in the sport and lead my team, but she also gifted me with a love for running. This passion of mine as well as her continual support has carried me through the difficulties of my grandfather’s death, my parents’ divorce, and other strenuous circumstances including the end of her time as my coach. Her presence in my life has truly altered my life for the better.…

According to Robert Charles Wilson in his book Blind Lake, “Understanding is better than ignorance. Ignorance, unlike life, unlike narrative, is static. Understanding implies a forward motion, thus the possibility of change.” (Wilson, 263) Without understanding something, people would never learn anything. Without learning anything, people would become prideful believing that we know everything, when in reality, nobody knows everything.…

He played an extremely significant role in shaping me to become the person that I am today.…
