There are so many chemical reactions and it is important to classify a chemical reaction to understand the reaction and predict the products. In this lesson, we will discuss the definition and go over examples of a combination reaction.

!!!What is a Combination Reaction?

Putting furniture together, combining ingredients to make something delicious – these things can be fun activities and we look forward to the results. Each individual component is not very exciting by itself. However, if we put together all these individual components, we can make something more complex and exciting.

In the same way, in chemical reactions, you can combine two or more reactants to form a new product. This reaction is classified as a __combination reaction__, which can also be referred to as a ‘’synthesis’’ reaction. In general, a combination looks like this:

!!!Types and Examples

Constructing and balancing chemical reactions from words are essential skills in chemistry. Before we proceed with the lesson, let us remember that when we refer to single elements such as carbon, magnesium, we can easily refer to the periodic table and write down their symbols. Carbon is C, potassium is K and Magnesium is Mg in chemical reactions.

There are, however, seven elements that exist as __‘’diatomic molecules’’__, which are molecules that are composed of two atoms of the same element. These are: hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine. For example, when we refer to iodine, in a chemical reaction, we write it down as I2, which is a diatomic molecule. The table below shows the elements and their diatomic molecule:
