The human circadian rhythm is a vital part of a person’s internal clock system. “Circadian desynchrony, is a sleep disorder where there is a mismatch with the body’s natural circadian rhythm and external environment.” (Choy & Salbu, 2011) This argues the fact that by switching time zones and environments that the body is not accustomed to will lead to irregular sleep cycles. Specifically when the body is moved across over two time zones it will lead to the perceived symptoms of jet lag (Choy & Salbu, 2011). To fully understand the effects of jetlag we need to understand that our body sleep clock is run by light and the exposure to light. If a shift in time zones occurs then it will allow for the fact that the cognitive thinking phase will be at a later or earlier stage than normal. This leads to a shift in times of body temperature changes and the body to increase temperature and decrease at the wrong time of day for that time zone. This results into drowsiness and unproductive behaviour (Dollins, et al. 1994). When body temperature time shifts it allows for the body to adjust to jetlag but it takes time in order for the bodily hormones to return to a normally functioning circadian rhythm (Science Buddies, 2014). All these effects can be also applied to workers who work the night shift, as their light balance will be off during the day and alive at night (Bowen, 2003). The hormone has the ability to lower core body temperature, modify brain levels of monoamine neurotransmitters, stimulate prolactin secretion and induce sleepiness (Bowen, 2003) so on long haul flights during the delay in sleeping allows for melatonin to be released at random and not normal times which means that the body temperature when in a different environment at night will be higher and lower during the day making one feel tired and generally not
