In fact, research shows that out of a study done with five-hundred speech-language pathologists, about eighty-five percent of them use NSOMEs to treat speech disorders (Gordy Rogers). Non-speech oral motor exercises are even used when diagnosing Childhood Apraxia of Speech. NSOMEs are even used when diagnosing the disorder. SLPs make these children do exercises like moving their tongue side to side, puckering the lips, and smiling and frowning. They may also check for muscle weakness in the child, to see if NSOMEs will continue to be used in their treatment strategies. Even if these strategies are not used on their own, they are commonly used with some other strategies for treating and diagnosing Apraxia. SLPs may also diagnose and treat by testing the speech coordination of a child with this disorder (“Childhood Apraxia). Children with Apraxia of Speech, commonly have muscle immaturity because the muscles are not used in speech the way they should be. They also have tests to check for muscle immaturity and to see if there is any muscle weakness to know to the level that NSOMEs would have to be used to help improve the speech of children with this disease. Usually, Speech-Language Pathologists, “develop a… system (e.g., normal strength, ROM, muscle tone, etc.).” They develop this system because they hope it will increase the chances of other speech therapy practices being more …show more content…
People who stutter, have an involuntary repetition of certain sounds, usually they are at the beginning of a word. It could also cause abnormal stoppages in words (“Stuttering FAQ”). Disorders like stuttering, cluttering, and other types of speech sound disorders are very hard to cure, and there are very little that can be done. However, there are certain approaches to speech therapy that can be taken to ensure the child will have at least some benefits from having speech therapy. For example, “If clinicians want speech to improve, they must work on speech, and not on things that LOOK like they are working on speech” (“Update on Controversy”). Children with speech sound disorders need to learn the “rules of speech” and what they can do to help improve how they speak. The children need to hear themselves say sounds and syllables, especially the ones they have trouble with. Their disorder is a problem with their speech and not being able to properly say certain sounds or words, so improving upon random muscle tone and muscle strength is not going to help improve these types of disorders
