Character Analysis Of Phoebe In Sharon Creech's Walk Two Moon

In the novel Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech Mrs. Partridge leave messages on Phoebe Winterbottom’s doorstep. These messages shine throughout the novel on how the characters view each other, and what they can do to become a better person.

The first message left on Phoebe Winterbottom states “Don’t judge a man until you've walked two moons in his moccasins” , and it relates to the character Phoebe in many ways. First Pheobe’s neighbor Margret Cadaver is said to be peculiar because of some of her actions such as odd hours because she is a nurse and having Mrs. in front of her name but not having a known about husband that lives with her. Phoebe resents Margret for these reasons and begins making assumptions. On page 31 Phoebe is talking

Sals mother leaves her and her father when, they are still living in Bybanks. This destroys Sal’s self esteem making her believe that this was all her fault. On the trip that Sugar Sal’s mom was taking she was taking to Margret Cadaver telling her that she missed her husband and was going to go back to Bybanks where she could talk with her cousin and find herself again. On the bus ride that Margret and sugar were on the bus turned and went off of the hill crashing into trees and killing everyone but Margret. One day in Euclid Ohio on page 61 Sal is at her friend Phoebe’s house and there is an envelope on their door step with a message saying “You can’t keep the birds of sadness from flying over your head, but you can keep them from nesting in your hair.” Sal could remind herself of this when she is feeling down saving her a lot of depression and hard times. On page 275 Sal proves to have the birds of sadness flying above her head she says “I am jealous that Phoebe’s mother came back and mine did not. I miss my mother.” Sal proves to have the birds of sadness flying above her head. She really misses her mother. It is really hard for her to prevent them from nesting in her hair.
