One of the most significant external forces that cause Sal to change is when she moved to Euclid, Ohio because she met Phoebe Winterbottom, were Phoebe changed Sal’s life. Partridge. In the past Sal and Phoebe thought the lunatic was a creep, that followed them, and left letters on the doorstep. Also the lunatic had wanted to see Mrs. Winterbottom when Sal and Phoebe first met him. Phoebe thought the lunatic had kidnaped Mrs. Winterbottom, and was going to come back for them. Sal says, I believe it came from the potential lunatic, ( page 48 ). The text says, we stepped out on the porch just as Mrs. Partridge placed a white envelope on the porch steps, (page 237). Up until this point there was never any strange letters on the steps. The lunatic was kinda suspicious when he showed up at the door, without warning, to see Mrs. Winterbottom. Sal changed when they saw Mrs. Partridge, place the envelope on the steps. She originally thought it was Mike, the lunatic who was leaving the letters. She did not expect it to be Mrs. Partridge because she seemed innocent and the lunatic was suspicious. Mrs. Winterbottom says, “Mike is my son,” (page 234). Mike is the lunatic, and no one thought he would be Mrs. Winterbottom's son. Sal changed because she thought Mike was dating Mrs. Winterbottom. Or Mike liked her and took her away.
