An example of strong word connotation is the phrase “Hollywood loves to preach” (The Washington Times 1). The word ‘preach’ is a word that can be used to dramatize the way Hollywood does and says things. The effect this type of connotation has on the audience is one that could make the reader wonder ‘what does Hollywood love to preach about?’ The word choice used in that sentence is both equally negative and positive depending on how one looks at it. The next form of connotation is in the phrase “turning off the trash”…
In my analysis, I will focus on two different essays; Be Specific by Natalie Goldberg and Killing the Written Word by Snippets by Naomi S. Baron. The list of things that Goldberg uses in her writing has a purpose to show the reader the many names objects have, and to give the reader a better understanding why it is so important to call things by their real names. Baron argues that when students rely on sound bites instead of full articles and books in their research, they lose the ability to analyze. In “Be specific” Goldberg writes about how knowing the names of people and things are important. So, people are more aware of their surroundings and feel more connected to the people around them.…
What is the language? The language is a most powerful weapon that we can used for to create a great impact on others; moreover, it could be influenced over and over the time. In “Politics and the English Language”, George Orwell stated that language is a reflection of our culture and society. On the contrary, in “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, Martin Luther King, Jr. shows his belief about the segregation and tried to bring his community up to against the unjust law. In the both texts, George Orwell and Martin Luther King, Jr. both shows that political leaders use the language to empower the individuals in society by making an encouragement to bring them together and convince them to believe as his or her belief.…
In completing the course English 112 at Robeson Community College, I have found myself with a new found understanding how to write various genres, and do them well. Newly, I have experienced the handling of opinion writing, research writing, and direct analyzation writing. These concepts greatly helped me achieve the knowledge of love in writing. This class had an overall positive affect on the individual I now am, and created a way in which I read an assignment, sit down, and promptly beginning work. In this class, aspects such as research, analyzation, and procrastination hit the closest to who I was before enrolling and completing this course.…

Throughout my time in English 101, my writing has undergone drastic improvements. The first writing assignment I chose to revise was Project 1, the Advertisement Analysis. My first draft of Project 1 had no clear thesis and no specific claim, ideally, an easy problem to solve. However, this was a common issue in my writing in most of my projects this semester, so it only made sense to tackle this project and revise it first. To begin revising Project 1, I first established my thesis statement which was that: the “Best Buds” advertisement was effective because of the incorporated rhetorical strategies and the overall theme of loyalty.…
With just a paper and a pen, the power of language can transform the world around you. Language has established a system of human communication, incorporating the application of words in a structured and customary way. Its purpose can profess emotions from one human to another and suddenly make you feel the lost emotions inside of yourself. In Coming Into Language written by Jimmy Santiago Baca, he emphasizes his wildly dangerous journey of life and being found in the influence of language within the walls of his jail cell.…
Hurston uses the tension between male and female figures in Janie’s life to promote her emotional growth and maturity. Janie’s spiritual journey traces back to her moment under the pear tree. Janie’s moment under the pear tree is an important symbol that defines the center of her quest throughout the novel, as it serves as the standard sexual and emotional fulfillment that she desires. The tree mirrors standard gender stereotypes as it references the tree waiting for the male bee to penetrate its blossoms. The subtle but efficient language that is used to describe the tree alludes to the female role: “the thousand sister calyxes arch to meet the love embrace and the ecstatic shiver of the tree” (10).…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…
How does Vonnegut achieve effects using stylistic devices and language? (Chapter 6) (Stylistic devices include anything a writer uses - from narrative to irony to verbs to dialogue to figurative language to block letters to short sentences) This extract is from the novel Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut, an American author who entered the Second World War as a private in the US Army. He was taken as a prisoner of war in Germany, and witnessed the destruction of Dresden by Allied bombers; hence this experience inspired him to write Slaughterhouse Five.…

Introduction: Arundhati Roy, the first Indian woman writer to have won the Man Booker Prize in 1997 for her debut novel The God of Small Things, has chosen to employ language psychologically, typographically, structurally, and culturally in order to create characters and represent the Indian sensibility in all its cultural dimensions. Language is not only employed to mean the spoken or written words but also the way cultural groups understand and communicate to one another through customs and traditions in the novel. Roy has employed the language in such a way throughout the novel that helps the reader better understand complexity of characters, most importantly Estahappen and Rahel, the seven year old twins who are most affected by the…
