Carrie Traits

The character I am choosing to use for this assignment is Carrie, from the movie Carrie (2002). I chose Carrie due to the fact that she displays herself throughout the movie as someone who is full of anxiety as well as depression. Based on what I learned from trait theory in class, a personality trait is usually consistent over time. Through the character Carrie, I believe she falls directly into the Big Five Personality Traits and Carrie’s would be neuroticism. Trait theory explains Carrie’s behavior of being neurotic due to the fact that she is a high school student with a very low self-esteem, doesn’t seem to be able to have a lot of friends or even interact with her peers on a daily basis. Carrie also shows to have a high level of anxiety throughout the movie as well. …show more content…
Her sensitivity to stress and her reaction to anxiety is apparent when she begins to scream hysterically as her fellow girl classmates throw tampons and laugh at her. Her anxiety is apparent here as she overreacts to something that is completely normal, although she believed she was dying. Carrie’s depression and resistance to attention within neuroticism is also apparent as she is constantly walking around school with her hair in front of her eyes while constantly looking down, in order to avoid eye contact with her peers and teachers. In addition to, Carrie shows her resistance to attention from others as constantly is speaking in such a low volume, you would consider it to be a whisper. Carrie further shows her feelings of depression and being blue as she did not at all seem happy throughout the film and spent most of her time crying due to the fact that she was often bullied by her classmates and rather than having positive interactions she always spent time

Carrie was mostly just a puppet of her mother instead of a separate, freethinking entity. There were a handful of times that Carrie rebelled, after which she was heavily punished: “-the time she had found that picture of Flash Bobby Pickett under Carrie’s pillow-and Carrie had once fainted from the lack of food and the smell of her own waste” (King 43). The depressed, post-holocaust tone of the book is reflective of Carrie’s state of mind. Suppressing her power, her natural feelings, and her emotions in fear of displeasing Momma, Carrie had to pretend she was something she wasn’t for a very long time. She had to run from who she actually was her entire life.…

Professor Malchodi EN 102 Life Passages class focused on life passages, or the transition from one stage of life to another. Many of the stories were about transition between childhood and adulthood and were relatable because I am also in that transition. At the beginning of my freshman year, I created a guiding question that will follow me throughout my four year of college. My question, “What is the relationship between personality and behavior?” relates to the class because I gained insight into other characters’ transitions from childhood to adulthood, which allowed me to grow my view on life.…

My parents have always challenged me to strive to do my best since I was a child. From pushing me to learn how to ride a bike at age five, to striving me to achieve a higher ACT score to attend the college I love, I learned how to become very independent and credible. As I approached my high school years, I changed mentally by creating a positive mindset after my freshman year. As to this day, getting a 3.11-grade point average has affected me in both positive and negative ways. One characteristic that I figured out about myself is that I am a person who learns from mistakes due to the fact that I am a tactile learner.…

Devyn Vermette PSYC 220 05 Journal Entry 1 The main point of this week’s textbook reading was to look at development through the different lenses of psychology( i.e the different theories). Taking the collective information from each of these theories, the key question is whether or not development is continuous or discontinuous? The most important information the author uses to answer this question is the fact that when you look at a lifespan, development is lifelong. Essentially this means that events occurring during each major period, or stage, of the lifespan have equal effect on the future.…

Trait theorists focus on the measurement of traits and believe that to better understand personality we should focus on an individual’s traits and characteristic behaviour(Saul Kassin,; 2003). Using the five-factor model of personality, trait theorists can develop different kinds of questionnaires, such as the NEO Personality Inventory, to measure a person’s personality traits (Costa, P.T. Jr. and McCrae, R.R, 1992). With this data, researchers can describe a person’s personality using the 5 global factors of the five-factor model. The five-factor model helps trait theorists identify characteristics that individuals possess and to the extent of which they are present (Matthews, Gerald; Deary, Ian J.; Whiteman, Martha C, 2003). Freuds psychodynamic…
