Journal Entry 1
The main point of this week’s textbook reading was to look at development through the different lenses of psychology( i.e the different theories).
Taking the collective information from each of these theories, the key question is whether or not development is continuous or discontinuous?
The most important information the author uses to answer this question is the fact that when you look at a lifespan, development is lifelong. Essentially this means that events occurring during each major period, or stage, of the lifespan have equal effect on the future. Development can be multidirectional and there is no single age period that reigns supreme over the impact on life’s course. Doing this, I had a fairly easy time picking out specific personality traits but I had a difficult time figuring out when/ where I acquired these certain traits. I believe the reason this homework assignment was hard was because I was thinking with the mindset of things happening at certain times in my development.
This information relates to my life because I always viewed my life, not in theories, but in stages. I believed that by a certain age I was supposed to accomplish and learn certain things. I remember being one of the first kids in sophomore year of high school to get her license, after started driver’s ed a year before, immediately after I turned 15. Instead of looking at my life as plastic experiences, I looked at my life as stages, like checkpoints I had to make. Now I can relax a little, knowing that life/ development is lifelong and I don’t have to put so much stress on it because it’s
