Christ makes a trip to Kansas while Sargeant finds refuge under a bridge. After they separate Sargeant sees a train and tries to hop on. He is met with cops on the train and ultimately they lock him up in jail. This can be viewed as the moment we stop following Christ the same things we were running from can catch up with us. While together the two never ran into any problems so that can be seen as the veil that Christ has over us. After he is locked up he wonders where Christ is now. People in jail use their locked up sentences from time to time to find Christ. Hughes shows us the process of a black man at the bottom of the chain. Ultimately he is already surrounded by whiteness from the snowstorm to the people. Not once did he notice he was surrounded by the snow but that did not take away from the idea that he was surrounded by nothing but white.
