Canadian Air Forces still uses half a century old Sea Kings. Helicopters. In July of 2013, entire fleet of Sea Kings were grounded. Canada has already lost 16 Sea Kings and their numbers are going down by the day. It cost Canada a fortune to run them as well. To run the Sea King for an hour, they require almost 30 hours of maintain. This means most Sea Kings are barely in the air. This makes Canada’s air support weak and open to terror attacks. In 2002, when Canadian troops were deployed to Afghanistan, they were left very vulnerable due to lack of air support. They had to cover most ground by land which put the soldiers’ life at risk as well. The number one of cause of casualties for Canadian soldiers were IED. It’s not only the helicopters that require replacement. Canadian fighter jets are due of replacement as well. Canadas 1980 CF-18 cost more to repair them then to actually buy them. A weaker navy not only makes Canada vulnerable to sea attacks but it creates a huge challenge for Canada to protect the arctic. Protecting the arctic is Canada’s fundamental duty. It is the home on may indigenous Canadians who have been living there for generations. Canada should not protect arctic just to protect the habitat of indigenous people but also to protect the natural resources. Having a smaller military power may benefit Canada, as it gives them more money to spend on more social aid like health care and they can rely on their allies to protect them. Canada is part of NATO. A North American Treaty Organization that was created in 1949. It was created by a combination of 28 North American and European countries. The treaty was aimed to protect one another. This treaty mentions that if an armed attack takes place on any of this 28 countries, it is an attack on the allay. In order to protect one another each country must contribute 2% of its total GDP to their defense spending. Canada deliberately fails to maintain that commitment and risk its position in NATO.
