Throughout the history, numerous scientist made scientist made notable contributions to scientific field which led to significant changes. Those who did amassed their fame and fortune through recognition of their findings while some were denied of their findings. Jocelyn Bell Burnell who then a 24 year old student made a significant impact on findings of pulsars and found the pulsars, a discovery that solved mystery of life and answered unclear questions of astronomy, did not receive the recognition which instead was inappropriately awarded to others due to sexism and her status of a student. It rotated with the earth scanning continuously to pick up “twinkling stars”. She was only one to operate it and track the ray at full time. She would analyze literally miles long paper and record the data. On August 6th 1967, few weeks after the telescope started working, Bell began to notice something peculiar on the record on paper chart that shows radio sources and man-made interference. She then realized it was not from twinkling radio source and it clearly was not from mad-made interference. Also she realized that it was coming at same period of time and it kept pace with the stars. She then began to analyze 3.5 miles of data spending weeks. After weeks of patience analyzing she concluded that it was star that ticks like a clock. It was beating at the time of just over 1 second. Greatly confused, Bell immediately took her data and analysis to her supervisor Hewish and her colleague. Their first reaction was that this must be man-made interference. She named it “pulsars” meaning pulsating star. Pulsars are neutron stars after exploded in the supernova. It spins and released pulse of radiation at constant frequency. At the time of discovery, it was believed that after star has exploded in supernova, everything dispersing into space, leaving nothing behind. In 1930, Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwiki when the supernova occurred, the core of the star would shrink into the neutron rich dense ball. Finding of the pulsars which are the leftover of supernova releasing emission became the first evidence of Zwiki. Her findings proved that neutrons stars are composed of strong magnetic field and spin like the lighthouse, releasing beam every time it spins. Also the finding of the pulsars led to acceptance of existence of the black hole. If the pulsars are 1mm denser than it was it would turn to black hole.
