Kabul, 1919. British aircraft bombed the city of Kabul, after declaration of independence from King Amanullah Kang. Although war had been going on for a while, Britain had purposely targeted civilians. Would Britain have done the same thing in 1819? It is hard to answer, because modern weapons didn’t exist yet. One thing is for sure, Britain proved time and time again that it did not leave WWI with any shred of honor. When did it become "ok" to dominate other people's? Imperialism had been practiced since the dawn of man, empires rose and died. The only reason why 19th century imperialism is significant, is that the dominating nations were superior in strength and belief. Nationalism led people into believing their nation to be superior. Superiority led to militarism, where people believed that military strength represented superiority, as in "Might makes right". Strengthening their nation's forces caused imperialism. People believed that war benefited and developed their nation. President Roosevelt said, "No triumph of peace is quite as great as the sublime triumphs of war." This trail of thought led to people believing that war was actually a good thing, for all of humanity itself. Because war was a "good" thing, what was the point in preventing it? Also, why hold back on tactics of war if they raised your chances of winning? Why not bomb that hospital, school, church? It will only lead to breaking the enemy, leading to our victory for humanity! A famous example is when Japan decided to take over Korea and Manchuria in 1904-1905. They didn't consider the humanity of what they did, they only considered the glorious victory.
