I went to Target on Black Friday about five years ago and left our Thanksgiving gathering, with my uncle, to purchase a PlayStation 3. We waited in the cold weather for about an hour and a half just to save forty dollars. After thinking about the idea of Black Friday, I do not really care for it. It is certain that stores have the ability to sell popular culture through their products and merchandise, but not many of them can say that they conduct their own national Thanksgiving Day Parade. Through its wide range of available products, Macy’s is able to target just about any type of consumer and profit off of them. The store not only carries a variety of products, but also a variety of brands, allowing a wide range of customers to be able to shop there. By offering everything from jewelry and fragrances to children’s toys and small electrics, Macy’s—the largest United States department store company by retail sales in 2015 —has been relatively successful in doing so since 1858. Thanksgiving, a holiday deeply rooted in American culture, is celebrated in accordance with the applicable tradition and rituals. Closely related to the tradition of first immigrants, Thanksgiving does not undergo any fashions and fluctuations. Thanksgiving Turkey has to be big ( 19 lbs) to feed 20 people and to provide much more food than during the regular meal (Friends). Thanksgiving dinner without turkey and typical dishes does not exist, like “4th July with no pie”(Friends). By consuming and celebrating food, people show their appreciation for all they achieved due to their social and national affiliation.…

Every year on Thanksgiving break I have gone to my grandparents house to stay for the week. For me this is important because my grandparents live a good ways away and I barely get to see them. This became a tradition when I moved away from where they live because that's when our other traditions ended like on wednesdays we used to meet somewhere and eat dinner but we can’t do that any more so we thought that Thanksgiving break is a good time to go see them because we have off school and they can get off work. The whole time we are up there we laugh cook and have fun together.…

As the story goes, after an entire year of operating at a loss (“in the red”) stores would supposedly earn a profit (“went into the black”) on the day after Thanksgiving, because holiday shoppers blew so much money on discounted merchandise. Though it’s true that retail companies used to record losses in red and profits in black when doing their accounting, this version of Black Friday’s origin is the officially sanctioned—but inaccurate—story behind the tradition. In recent years, another myth has…

Americans and others around the world are often struck with what is deemed “shopaholic syndrome.” The symptoms of this are spending preposterous amounts of time and money shopping. To treat this, a Buy Nothing Day was conceived and established in some countries.
