There is not a single nationwide surveillance system for cardiovascular diseases, however there are several types of surveys, studies, and registries. The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is a state-based, random dialed telephone survey of the United States population ages18 years or older (CDC, 2015). The BRFSS is conducted in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 3 United States territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands). Statistics from the BRFSS have been shown to be dependable and legitimacy assess CVD risk factors (CDC, 2015).
