Department of Health and Human Services, in collaboration with nonprofit and private organizations, is launching the campaign, Million Hearts. The goal is to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over the next 5 years. Million Hearts is expected to align policies, programs, and resources to improve access to care; focus attention on improved care through use of the aspirin therapy, blood pressure control, cholesterol management, and smoking cessation (ABCS), measures to prevent cardiovascular disease and health information technology; increase public awareness about risk factors; improve medication adherence; promote healthier behaviors and environments; and enhance surveillance and monitoring, (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). ABCS have gained notoriety in treatment methods to reduce CVD by various case studies (Lauer, 2011). The goal to reduce CVD by empowering the public and physicians will align with the clinical and community efforts in monitoring of interventions. Community health nurses contribute to this by exercising social responsibility in applying epidemiological findings, but this responsibility requires the active involvement of the consumer (Nies & McEwen,
