Beautiful And Damned Chapter Summary

Summary Exposition: In the book, Beautiful & Damned, the protagonist is Scarlett. She is the one the story is based off of, as it follows her life. The setting of the story is not very specific, as some of it takes place in grade school and some of it takes place in their later lives. A quote that shows part of the setting is, “They met in grade school” (Drake 63). The society of this short story is Hector and Scarlett. In the story, there are a few friends involved, and some others, but most of the story revolves around these two. Scarlett is involved in a quite a few conflicts along the way. One conflict is man vs. self with Scarlett vs. herself. The story says, “... she would sit for hours. She couldn't help but wonder…” (Drake 68). This …show more content…
This takes place on pages 80 and 81. “Scarlett is that really you?” (Drake 80), explains Hector approaching Scarlett on the street as he saw her. Hector at first does not recognize Hector, because he is in fact a homeless man now and she cannot see past the new identity of this man. Scarlett proceeds to examine this man, known as Hector, and soon comes to the realization that this was once the love of her life. “Hector what happened to you? Why? How?” (Drake 81). This shows Scarlett coming to her realization that this homeless man is Hector. Hector explains how he started using drugs three years ago and how things just got out of hand since then. Scarlett was at a complete loss for words, as she just listened to him explain how he went so downhill, and at the end he expected her to say nothing. He then ends its with a farewell once again, and shouts across the street “Happy Birthday” (Drake …show more content…
This quote is explaining how on Scarlett’s birthday, she woke up a little later than usual, she treated herself a little more, and didn’t really have any worries. I connect to this in the way that on my birthday, I don't really worry about much. I focus on having a good day, taking time to myself, and being good to myself. I think not only I, but everyone can connect to this one.
Visuals:

One image that really stuck out to me in the book is Hector sitting alone in the beginning of the book on the picnic table. The above image doesn’t have a specific name, but it reminds me of when the book says, “One day during grade school, he sat out back at the picnic tables during a sweltering day. No one was out…” (Drake 63). This quote indicates he is in fact, all alone. Although there were many images on the internet of a boy alone on a picnic table, this one just happen to stick out to me. When I read this part in the book, I visualized exactly a little boy, upset and

When you think of the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast, what do you remember? In the typical plot of Beauty and the Beast, Beauty aids the Beast in his transformation from beast to man. The focus of the typical storyline is the battle between innate traits and characteristics accepted by society. However, in Angela Carter’s post-modern rendition, Tiger’s Bride, not only does she shift the focus to explore the relationship between love and self-acceptance, but she also changes the plot in efforts to make Beauty undergo a transformation. Through Carter’s tone, exploration of power dynamics, and use of imagery, the story follows the progression of the love and self-acceptance that influences Beauty’s metamorphosis.…
