According to Myers (2001), attachment “builds gradually and slowly over the first year of a child’s life, parent-infant attachment is a child’s first close relationship and, to a large extent a model for all relationships that follow”. This description demonstrates the significance and powerful influence of a secure attachment early in a child’s life. Studies have measured babies quality attachment through a variety of standardized assessments. Some aspects of these measures include a baby’s reaction when its caregiver is responsive to its needs, comforts it when distraught, and interacts with the baby. Ashley demonstrated the need to be with her mother, yet was disappointed on many occasions because her mother was not responsive. When losing one’s caregiver, or in Ashley’s case ripped away, children’s response can often be through anger and sadness. On one occasion, Ashley punched a fellow foster sibling in the eye because she could not contain her anger. Ashley could not cope with her emotions and loss therefore became harmful to herself, others, and property. Ashley was grieving in order to manage the pain of separation consequently resulting in the five stages of grief. After being torn from her mother, Ashley was in shock to why this was happening to her family. Majority of the memoir Ashley was convinced she would some day return back into her mother’s care for good. Bargaining may occur because the child desires for a normal routine again. Next, children can often blame themselves through guilt even if they didn’t do anything wrong. Following is anger and resentment for the loss happening. Sadness often occurs next in the stages of grief exemplified through emptiness and loneliness. Last stage is acceptance. In Ashley’s case, I don’t think acceptance will be fully completed due to the complexity of separation and losses within her life. It takes a great deal of time to heal such
