Andrew Laeddis Essay

In the film it could be argued that there are two characters who could represent the id. The id, according to Freud, is the impulsive part of the human psyche. It is within our unconscious mind and is the part of our psyche that make irrational and quick decision based on wants and desires. Without the other two parts we would be impulsive and primitive as the id does not consider what is right and wrong. In the film Andrew Laeddis represents certain parts of the id while Dolores Chanal represents parts as well. A strong example of where Andrew represents the id is during a flashback when we learn that he killed his wife after learning that she drowned their three children. Without thinking he made an impulsive decision that led him to killing …show more content…
Andrew is the unconscious and previously conscious part of Teddy that has been there since birth. Near the end of the film Teddy learns of what Dolores has done and she subsequently tells him to “set her free” which ultimately leads to him murdering her. On the other hand Dolores also represents the id. She is impulsive and although we do not know an awful lot about her we do know that she impulsively drowned her three children. Although Dolores is not part of Teddy’s psyche she is a character that is portrayed as impulsive and somewhat primitive. She is seen to suffer with extreme, untreated depression that manifests itself within her personality. She is decidedly disconnected with others and seemingly does not create emotional relationships with others. Even though she does not seem to create emotional attachment to other people she is quite emotional. Dolores is very sad, she is alone and somewhat paranoid. We see in Teddy’s flashbacks and hallucinations how depressed yet somewhat cynical Dolores is. For example, during one of his flashbacks we learn that Dolores set her and Andrew’s first house on fire in attempts to kill

In order to describe both the ego and the id Sigmund Freud uses an analogy. Freud compares the ego to a horseback rider, while the id is seen as the horse that is being ridden. According to Freud the ego is like a man on a horseback who tries to guide the horse (id); however, the horse does everything possible to oppose the ego and insist on doing what seems pleasurable. The id is a powerful force who tries to dominate over the ego, yet the ego does everything possible to find enough strength to be able to dominate over the id. Although the id, or in this case the horse, is very powerful, the ego, or horse rider, must do whatever is necessary to take the id’s desires into account and transform them into rational actions.…

Human beings, as individuals, place a substantial amount of importance on and extensively value the consideration that we are unique. This is foundational aspect of human nature, interaction, and being. But what does this uniqueness mean, and what does it mean to us? The concept of the self or having a personal identity leads to questions of what one is really addressing when making statements about the self; such as, how is the concept of the self created or formed? Does the self persist through time, and how can we know that this identity is the same as we flow through time?…

His story has taken on many different forms from comics, to TV series, and to today’s modern cinematography. However, I want to discuss the story of Batman and its famous characters based off of the 2000’s version of the current films. We have all come to know Batman as a vigilante who fights bad people as he conceals his true identity as Gotham’s renowned playboy and millionaire, Bruce Wayne. I want to use the personas of Bruce Wayne, Batman, and the well-known villains of this universe because of how they relate to the many ideas used in psychology.…

Throughout the film, characters constantly mention other artists that have achieved greatness but then fall down a path of loneliness and depression. At the dinner table scene Andrew says, “I’d rather die broke and drunk at 34 and have people at a dinner table somewhere talk about it than die rich and sober at 90 and have no one remember me” showing the true ending to Andrew’s self-destructive path. Chazelle offers a moment that allows the audience to reflect on Andrew’s character arc and journey through the harrowing silence of his success at the climax of his self-destructive…

Freud describes the id as the basic biological reflexes and drives that maximize pleasure and minimize pain. He also says that the id tries to remove all excitation and return to a quiet state (Crain, 2011). Juliana reflects the id as she is head over heels for Bryce for majority of the movie and finds pleasure in being around him although he does not return those feelings. At one point during the film, Juliana is asked about Bryce and a comment is made about how she is always talking about him unconsciously. She responds with “it must be his eyes” which demonstrates that she finds pleasure by just being near him even though he tends to ignore her or treat her terribly.…

Davies represents id as he is driven by his instincts of survival and aggression and he knows no judgements of value or morality. Aston represents ego as he tries to fulfill the desires of id (Davies) in realistic ways. Freud states “The ego is that part of the id which has been modified by the direct influence of the external world” (The Ego and the Id 25). Likewise Aston has been treated (modified) with electric shocks in a mental hospital (external world) for being too talkative or for being driven by his instincts like id. Mick represents the super-ego which strives to act as a conscience and helps one to comprehend what is right and what is wrong. The super-ego works in contradiction to the id. In a similar fashion, Mick works against Davies.…
