Panathenaic festival was held in Greece Athena every year, sacrifices to Athena in Acropolis (fig 1.1) was an important part. To complete the sacrifices, a procession to Parthenon through them prescribe route is require (fig 1.1, A), and sacrifices happened in altar of Athena (fig 1.1 B). All this procession was depicting on the Frieze of Parthenon, which would be discuss later in this essay. Although ceremony was not actually held in Parthenon, Parthenon “represents the tangible and visible efflorescence of Athenian imperial power”. Athenian dedicate this temple to Athena and celebrate Athena’s golden age, by place cult statue in it. An interesting thing about Parthenon is, the façade is face east as most of Greece temple, the first view of Parthenon is the back side of it. In a similar context. Ancients civilization decorates building with cults image to show worship to deities. The frieze (fig 2.1) of Parthenon directly reflects religious observance of Athenian. It was located around the upper perimeter temple, and contains 623 subjects (378 humans, 245 animals). They come together to illustrate a single story, which was thought to represents the Panathenaic procession. The frieze procession begins at the southwest corner and proceeds in two direction, culminating in the centre point of the east side. Importantly we can match the numerous image on the frieze to the historical accounts of Panathenaic procession. All the west side and most of the north and south side was depict with riders.
