by creating food and clothing banks in churches, taking up money to pay rent and mortgages, and got people off the street to march and support the strike. King tried his best to solve the problem positively but unfortunately the demonstration went downhill when a group of students at the end of the parade used the signs they were marching with to break windows and vandalize cars. Sixty people were injured and one person was killed. The outbreak of violence distressed Dr. King. After assuring that he along with other members of the SCLC were committed to nonviolence, another march was scheduled for April 5th, one day before the march King was assassinated. Although the sanitation workers ended up getting better wages and union recognition, Dr. King could not completely save us from all of the hate in the world. Many of the issues that he addressed and tried to solve without violence are still raging on more violent than ever. It is now an everyday occasion to see a video tape of people of color being mistreated by policemen and being mistreated in grocery stores. Many people even feel as if our current president is racist. Dr. King took many steps forward in changing the way African Americans were treated in America, but for every step forward we’ve taken since his past there seems to be three steps taken backwards.
