This movement had its roots in the centuries-long efforts of African slaves and their descendants to resist racial-oppression and abolish the institution of slavery according to (Carson 2014). It was a time in the South where blacks were treated like animals. They were subjected from integrating with whites, and where controlled by white rule. It affected society tremendously because people lost their lives, homes, and families fighting against racial segregation. It also impacted society by having people walking the streets in the South with psychological issues which ceased their productivity in the community. It was not until the 1950s and 1960s that the struggles of racial inequality first surface across national headlines according to (Tuck 2004). While struggles have plagued African Americans for centuries, it took African Americans to voice their opinions by protesting and marching the streets of the South. As a leader of the free world Dr. King took the challenge in preparing African Americans in protesting against racial segregation and discrimination in the South.
