A Conversation Between Myself(s): A One-Act Play

(Several versions of myself occupy my bedroom. Sassy me – also mildly sarcastic – leans against my doorway, arms crossed. Logical me sits attentively at my desk. Stressed me lays on my bed, eyes closed. Pensive me sits on my windowsill and looks outside silently. Cheerful me sits at the foot of my bed, smiling.)

Stressed: (sighs heavily) Writing this “Why UChicago” essay is really stressing me out. My brain hurts.
Sassy: (rolls eyes) What’s new?
Stressed: Hey, this is no easy feat. Telling a university why you want to go there is like telling your parents why you love them.
Sassy: That’s not hard at all. I love my parents because they feed me, house me, buy–
Logical: Guys, no fighting please. Let’s work this out one step at a time.
Cheerful: Yeah! (jumps up in excitement) Stressed, let us help! I’m sure we can work

You want to attend UChicago because they sent us t-shirts and cute advertisements?
Cheerful: (frowns) No, not just for that reason. The mail advertisements paint a self-portrait of UChicago. After reading all the mail, I’ve learned that UChicago is an institution that values intellect, innovation, and diversity.
Logical: Now that you mention it, I know exactly what you’re talking about, Cheerful.

Everyone looks expectantly at Sassy.

Sassy: I guess it’s my turn. (sighs) I am attracted to the University of Chicago because it challenges us. Just from the writing prompts alone, my brain has turned itself over and over. The university will prepare us for whatever the world throws our way. There’s a genuine love for learning and a vibrant community instilled within UChicago. I’m ready to see the world from a new perspective – one that UChicago will help me develop.

Stressed: (smiles widely) Guys, I think we have our

I was over ecstatic when Fernando, (also known as Fernie) my best guy friend asked me to go on a walking adventure with him in our hometown of Kelseyville, California. We started off the day by walking in the forest alongside of Kelsey Creek. This forest has a really big meaning to Fernie and I, because we both love nature in every aspect and these walking adventures are not uncommon to us. Starting on the path we both got lost in our own thoughts, I got distracted by looking above me at the the canopy the tree branches created. My eyes followed the patterns the sunlight was creating as it broke through the leaves and cascaded onto the uneven forest floor.…
