The definition of a stereotype is any commonly known public belief about a certain social group or a type of individual. Stereotypes are often created about people of specific cultures or races, but everyone can be affected by stereotyping which makes it a big, ongoing problem to this day. There are many ways to stereotype a person, such as, all white Americans are obese, lazy, and dumb; men who spend too much time on the computer or read are geeks; all Mexicans are lazy and come into America illegally; all Arabs and Muslims are terrorists; or even positive stereotypes, like that all Americans are friendly, generous,…

Another stereotype comes into my mind of being an Asian-American is that all Asians are over-achievers and live to please others. In the movie, The Internship, there is a character name Yo-Yo Santos who is an Asian-American teenager that always shows off his intellectual skills. While the others non-Asian characters who in the movies being portray as vibrant, funny and outgoing; Yo-Yo Santos seems to be very underdeveloped and does not have much of a personality. People often think that Asian-Americans generally do not have sociable personalities, but they are mistaken our politeness as a one dimensional traits.…

Moreover, I was guilty of stereotyping Americans. I should not have believed the stereotype about Americans that most of them are overweight. Before I came to America, someone told me that Americans are obese, and if I wanted to keep a good figure, I’d better cook Chinese food and eat as little American food as I could. After I came here, I noticed that a large amount of girls I saw on the downtown streets and campus own a thin and healthy figure. I realized that this stereotype mislead me, since just a few people are overweight.…

Even though the intent is to highlight the negatives in black communities I can relate to the content and its characters. I do agree with the stereotypes of the characters but I can see how it may send out the wrong message about African Americans as people. Riley Freeman for instance is a prime example of how the media portrays African Americans as loud, aggressive, violent, and unfashionable. He wears oversized clothes, has cornrows, and is very vulgar. Throughout the series, Riley constantly refers to others as “N*ggas”, “Hoes” and other derogatory terms.…

With the use of traditional media and new media such as social media platforms, people of color are targeted and portrayed as destructive, opposing and inferior characters that are to be blamed for a majority of society’s crimes. From books to cinema, to media reports, the common use of stereotypes has neglected people to see the positive attributes of African Americans and only see them as characters to fear and to be looked down upon. Many of published books from the past and currently still use racism as a key factor to grab people’s attention and make them believe false accusations. An example that shows significant meaning is from “The Brute Caricature,” by Dr. David Pilgrim who explains in depth how racism and mass incarceration has developed…

Most people are vaguely aware that there is a country somewhere called "Canada", but they only "know" it's a snowy and cold place. In addition, when you ask about Mexico to anyone, they immediately turn to stereotypes on the Mexican identity: the moustache, the sombrero, the indispensable guitar and multi-colored ponchos… which apparently reflect the image one might have of Mexican people. In contrast, most of the world knows about the United States. The United States is known as “the land of freedom”, people from all over the world immigrate to the United States for a better life, including Mexicans and Canadian residents. America is widely diverse and there is little of every culture anywhere.…

The scholarly research articles from Hobart, Huike, Byars, and Scharrer compare and constructed old Asian American media to that of the present and how some Asian stereotypes are still very much present. The articles stress the importance of how Asian Americans are still very much generally underrepresented in the media of the United States and this lack of representation is worrisome because it limits roles for Asian Americans to stereotypical ones. “By only propagating certain roles to Asian Americans this leads to false beliefs among the society and continues the cycle of misunderstanding and pigeonholing”(Hobart, 2015). Hobart and Huike articles entail how modern shows like Fresh off the Boat does a great job in subverting Asian stereotypes…
