A Personal Reflective Essay (UD)

Decent Essays
At UD, I see myself flourishing in classrooms and lecture halls, sharing ideas and conversation. School has always been a constant and a comfort, and that security will help me adjust to college. I’ve known the same 207 kids since pre-K, and I’ve been a part of the same group of friends for seven years. Reaching out to people I don’t know is daunting, but my curiosity and excitement to meet new people outweighs my apprehension. I want campus life to motivate me to say, "Hey!" to people I don't know. Finding my groove at UD will require me to take control of my responsibilities and my life. I’ve driven myself to the doctor with a 101 degree fever, but I’ve never been away from home for more than two weeks. I have a strong hold on my independence

As an incoming freshman in August of 2015 taking Rhetoric 105, I not only learned how to take apart papers, summarize, paraphrase, analyze and construct passages, but overall to be a great thinker. There are many ways that a person can tell you that works to become a better thinker, but it starts within you. While writing papers this fall semester, I learned that my writing became better when I a. understood what was being asked of me via the criteria, b. allowed myself to make mistakes in order to understand what I was and wasn 't doing correctly, c. I started to question myself, not in a way of was the work too hard, but in the sense of what the assignment and the thesis I am creating is asking. At this stage, you have to be completely real…

When it comes to understanding yourself and your personality on a deeper level than normally, you must take personal stories into perspective that have shaped your life while growing up. According to McAdams, “defining oneself through a personal story is an act of psychological and social responsibility” (Engler 2009). Psychological and social responsibility relate to how you act onto actions around you and how you tie society into your viewpoint of the world. In other words, explaining yourself through a story can show several things such as how your emotions played an affect, the type of response you displayed to something that happened, and as well as the lessons you learned through a personal but also social aspect. In addition, McAdams…

As I entered my first year of college this past semester, I not only found I like college but that I absolutely love being at Messiah. I want to help other incoming first-years to work through the worries of starting college in the same way that Amy and Megan (my RA’s) helped me. As people in my life have pointed my strengths out, I have realized that I love to be around people and building solid, deep relationships. People in my life encouraged me to walk down the hallway during welcome week, pop into people’s rooms and just say hi. This has led to some of…

Writing has been my talent since grade school; I couldn’t sing, or dance but I could write, or so I thought. Then, I entered high school and realized that writing required a lot more than it did in middle school. The brisk pace and advanced comprehension skills required for my English three AP course caused my grades to suffer. I have struggled with college level essay writing tremendously, but through hard-work I have been able to write with more ease and finesse than ever before.…

Every morning before I leave for school, my father preaches the same aphorism, “It is better to give than to receive, Jackie.” And every morning, I shrug off these same words. I reflect on the immense joy everything I have received in my brief 17 years has brought me. The stunning images I am gifted by Kubrick, Fincher, and Reitman triumph any present I have received under the tree on Christmas morning. The writings of Kate Chopin and Charlotte Perkins Gilman bestow on me lessons that would have taken a lifetime to learn, in just a chapter.…

Typically, I tend to struggle with introductions, conclusions, and capturing detail when it comes to writing. I always write the body paragraphs first, typically followed by the conclusion, leaving the introduction for last. As I scrolled through the course catalog for my first trimester of senior year, I searched for courses that would fit with my passions and senioritis. I was pretty much finished with a lot of my requirements for graduation, so I wanted to take classes that interested me and involved most of my passions. I took a mental note of a few of the classes I would definitely want to register for: Advanced Drawing and Painting, Latin American Studies, Western Feminism… and the list went on. I continued this process of selecting my classes until I came to a pause. Existentialism.…
