Reflective Essay: My Experience As A Writer

Improved Essays
At the beginning of this English course, I was so nervous and scared that I would fail. I do not think I have ever been a good writer. It has always terrified me because I have difficulty putting my thoughts down on paper. This course has proven to be highly inspiring to me as well as frightening. It has really taught me more about the understanding of the writing process and structure, in which helped me to not focus so much on the actual writing parts. Not focusing so much on the writing, helped me to really release my thoughts down on paper because I was worried more about the structure, organization, and proper formatting. I have accomplished a lot over this course I once believed to be unattainable. With my newfound knowledge and experiences …show more content…
Writing an essay about my experience as a writer and how I feel when I write. I thought should be a breeze until, I received my grade back. It was not a horrible grade, nor what I was expecting. When reading the teacher’s comment “While you did write your response in several paragraphs, it isn 't fully a reflective essay. To be an essay, it must include an introduction paragraph that ends with a thesis/focus sentence, supporting body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.” That is when I realized that I really did not know how to write a proper essay. When I was in high school the teachers just worried more about the spelling and just if it sounded okay. Now that I am in college taking English Composition I understand that I really do not know the full basics of …show more content…
Every essay I have wrote I sent in to the writing center. They have truly helped me with breaking down my papers to make it easier for me to see what I have done wrong. For example, in my narrative essay they pointed out certain details that they felt needed to be added, like where they were staying and where was I going to go see them at. To me this was not details I thought were important, but they helped me to see that part of my story would have been confusing for my

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

My mind feels like a 1000 piece puzzle missing a piece. I can’t simply find the right words to say to start this paper. It is always like this when freewriting; the idea of freewriting in and of itself frightens me. Never able to put the words in my head onto paper in a way that it can be read eloquently by others. My hands start to cramp automatically at the idea of freewriting.…

Before English 1157, I wanted to cry at the thought of writing an essay. I had always considered myself to be a horrible writer and I just had to accept the fact that I would never be good at it. Instead of being taught how I could improve my essays in high school, the teachers were only worried about the 5-paragraph essay format. With that being said, Dr. Rutledge mentioned how he hated that format and would give us an F if we used it.…

I have always believed that teachers shape the people we become. They influence us just as much as our family. I have been fortunate enough to meet four extraordinary teachers along my educational path. They taught me not only how to improve my writing, but life lessons that made me the thinker and writer I am today. Mrs. Ceci was the first teacher who brought me out of my shell.…

Writing has been my talent since grade school; I couldn’t sing, or dance but I could write, or so I thought. Then, I entered high school and realized that writing required a lot more than it did in middle school. The brisk pace and advanced comprehension skills required for my English three AP course caused my grades to suffer. I have struggled with college level essay writing tremendously, but through hard-work I have been able to write with more ease and finesse than ever before.…

How This Class Has Improved My Writing Skills: In the beginning of the year, my writing skills were pretty poor. I was not getting the grades I wanted on any of the papers I had written. Mainly I needed help in the areas such as organizing my thoughts, grammar technique, putting them down on the paper in order, using run-on sentences entirely too much, and using MLA format correctly. I worked on all of these skills every time I tried to write a paper as the semester went by I noticed my marks slightly improving. Because of this course I have structure and I have devised a plan before I begin to write.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. After attending this class I realized that there is a lot more that goes into writing an essay, or a research paper, than just creativity alone. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…

I’ve chosen to focus on “Exploration and Argumentation” as the subject of this reflective introduction, specifically looking at my argument paper, “Abortion: Right or Wrong?” as a reference to the importance of this learning outcome. I chose to focus on this particular learning outcome because it was the most difficult essay for me to create. While writing this essay it was difficult for me to understand and reciprocate the opposing viewpoint. Understanding an unfamiliar idea and giving ideas for or against a topic is key to creating a fluent argumentative essay.…

Throughout this course, writing took more than just writing about what you read. Here I learned to process all the information that needs to be processed and come up with some way to get it out on paper. With writing I have learned that vocabulary and grammar are two very affective sides to it. With grammar I have learned when to end a sentence. Working on grammar for my writing also allowed me to learn, when the time came for me to use punctuation and extend the sentence.…
